I was shopping around today and came across a very nice 35 Remington 7600 Carbine. I guess this is the first one I have seen in the carbine and 35 Remington. I don't know how many of those that they made as I usually find them in 30-06 and a few 270's. This one has a Simmons Pro 50 2.8x10 scope on it. One little scratch on the reciever is the only mark I saw on it. I didn't buy it YET. Just thinking.
IMO, the .35 REM. chambering is not too common. I'd buy it if the price was not too steep! The .35 REM is a fun cartridge, and can be used at full power with cast bullets!

I realize all that but the .35 rem is not the cannon people think it is.I've killed about 20 deer with one and have been on hand when at least that many morewere killed. In almost every case the deer ran quite a ways unless they were hit in the neck or high in the shoulders through the spine. Also, except for shots through the ribs,I rarely saw complete penetration. That's the one rifle I've never handloaded forand unless there's a nw powder,I find it extremely hard to believe that you can safely get 2200 fpswith a 220 gr bullets out of an 18 1/2 inch barrel.Shot placement is the most important aspect of killing anything.Without a doubt the .35 rem will kill a bear with good shot placement but that rifle and caliber are far from theideal bear package.

The 180 grain is the one that shoots 2200 fps. The Contender barrel that I have comes darn close balistic wise to the 20 inch Marlin that I have. I shoot the 200 grain spire point most of the time in the contender and the 200 and 220 grain speer in the Marlin. I will try the 200 grain Hornady Spire point first in the 7600. Its a pretty good boost over the 30-30 which has take all North American big game. My Black bears shots are usually at 25-40 yards and the 35 Remington or 30-30 are both up to that task. I have also shot a couple moose with the 14 inch contender. I know it works for deer and Black bear because I just finished my 49th seasons. I have used almost every caliber from the 222 to the 416 Rem Mag and my favorite, the 45-70. For Bear that is.

Ithink you're misunderstanding my position.I'm not saying it's up to the task.A 30-30 or a 35 rem will certainly kill any bear at close range with good shot placement.Several years agoan 800+ lb black bear was killed with a 30-30 in Pa.I'm simply saying it's not the best choice.I never handloaded the .35 but all the manuals I have list nothing close to 2000 fps with a 220 gr bullet.I'm not saying it can't be done though.I just wouldn't try it.

Where I hunt bear in Pa,it's extremely thick laurel on steep ridges or in thick swamps. When you hit a bear, you want it to go down as quick as possible or risk losing itbecause we hunt the thickest cover imagineable. You also wantcomplete penetration because the blood trails are usually less with bears than other animals. There is no way a .35 rem with completely penetrate a big bear if anything solid is hit.No way.Now I've only ever used factory loads with that caliber and I know for a fact, they rearely shoot 2000 fps with 200 gr bullets out of a 20 inch barrel.perhaps your handloads do better.I can't say because I never witnessed them.

If you're looking for something different, then by all means use the .35.You're obviously experienced so I'm sure you'll know how to make the best of the situation. That combination will certainly kill a bear at reasonable distances. However,it just isn't the cannon so many think it is.Also,in my opinion it has no practical advantage over the 30-30.

The 220 grain bullet in the Marlins 20 inch barrel yields 1980 fps and 1750 in the Contenders 14 inch barrel. The 200 grain clocks 2012 from the Marlin and 1880 from the Contender. The 1800 grain clocks 2210 from my Marlin but just under 22 in the contender. The 35 gives about 150 lb ME over the 30-30 but the 220 grain bullet penetrates much further than the 170 grain 30-30. Plus the increase frontal area.

If we go on raw power then of course the 458 Win Mag would be a much better Black Bear gun. However if you want a light short easy to handle tree stand type rifle that has plenty of punch at ranges out to 100 yards, then the 7600 Carbine or the Marlin Lever in 35 Remington is perfect medicine. I am one of the idiots that thinks a guy can have enough without excess. I don't belong in the whiz bang age.But thats ok because theres plenty of those guys as well. The old 30-40 Krag was one of the best short range hunting rifles we ever used but it to has gone the way of the pep squeek cartridges. The last two big Blacks that I have taken in Sask, were taken with the 45-70.

RH. How do you like your 760?

James I have had it since the 70's. I used it for hogs a couple years and it has been in the safe since. I loved the stopping power and the quickness of the following shots on Boss Hogs! I have been offered $1000 for it, but I have many good memories with it and my son want's it.

Those numbers seem about right.I still say it's too bad they don't chamber that same rifle in a .358 win. There wouldn't be any room to argue with that combination.I'm not a big fan of the 7600's either.I don't like cleaning barrels from the muzzle,I hate their triggers and I'm not crazy about the clips.I think ifi was looking for a different gun in the situation you're describing.I'd pick up a used model seven and have it rebarelled to a .358.that would be a cool gun and something that's different. That's just me though.

I don't have a right eye so I have to shoot left handed buit my left shoulder is so bad now that I can't work a LH bolt. For me its a pump or auto or handgun that I can shoot with my right hand and left eye. I lost the right eye about 35 years ago in a construction accident. I love the 7600 anyway. They are as accurate as most blots and totally dependable. This will be my sixth one.

They have a Winchester Model 100 at the pawn shop here in 358. It is however a converted 308. I can shoot a lever but it hurts my arm something awful to work the lever if I have to try it fast. I can reach accross and work a RH bolt if the gun is not to heavy to hold up with the left arm or if I have a rest. Recoil raises H with the bad shoulder too. I should give it up but that ain't gonna happen. I get alon pretty good with the Contender but I think the Encore is next. More options.
