I was impressed with the Sauer 202 and 200 series rifles. Never fired a .223 but the '06 and .300 win mag I fired were the nicest rifles I ever fired. Pretty expensive though. New price is from 1500-300 bucks.
Also look at the Sako 75 and 85. Fine Euro rifles and nice wood. Then look at Tikka from finland. Owned by Sako now (which is owned by the Giant, Beretta). I think they are around 600 bucks for the T3. Nice wood and alot of guys on this forum swear by them.
Savage's new premium rifle, the American classic looks really promising. Good walnut stock and a real high gloss blue finish on the metal, just like the guns of yesterday. Areoun 600 bucks. But I am not sure they make a .223.

PS, I own 2 CZ rifles and I just love them. Not the prettiest but they are much nicer looking than my Savage
