What's with the 7.62x39mm shortage?

Default What's with the 7.62x39mm shortage?

I'm trying to save up for a bolt action chambered for the above round, maybe the CZ carbine or the new Remington 799. I'm deciding to go this route over a more traditional varmint round since I'm unlikely to find myself in a situation where I could use the full range potential of a .223 or .22-250.

The problem is that most dealers midway, etc. seem to be out of all bulk, steel case ammo. What's up with this?

The steel cased ammo isnt very accurate out of any rifle, so i would limit myself to a close shot with the steel cased stuff. 100 yards would probably be the maximum range unless your rifle happens to like the stuff. the winchester 123 grain softpoints seem to shoot better out of the SKSs, AK and a ruger 77 that ive seen shot at the local range.

i cant explain any shortage, hey i never knew there was one. theres a gun show coming up in april ill let ya know about the situation up here in Canada.

I think that some African country has a contract with Wolf or some other company has a for ammo. I just heard that so I am not sure.

I can get Wolf 7.62x39 locally for about $2.99/BOX still, but I can't get unlimited quantities of it.
I'm really itching for an AKM right now, but I might put the money towards and AR-15 as I already have a SKS that's getting difficult to feed.

I shot plenty of x39 and 54R steel cased ammo and haven't been disappointed with accuracy at least in military rifles, though it goes without saying that I can do better with handloads. It doesn't make much sense to burn up winchester x39 ammo in a SKS at $10-15 a box unless you are using it for hunting.

Supreme accuracy isn't too huge a deal for me. My local range doesn't even extend past 100 yards. I'm really just looking for a centerfire I can feed for cheap without having to reload for and have fun blowing up pumpkins at 50-100 yards. The .22 rimfires just don't pack the power for that. I do go back and forth between the .223 and 7.62x39. I can reload for my .357 mag carbine fairly cheap, but sometimes it's a little disheartening to burn offall the ammo I spent a week reloading in an afternoon.

I have 1200 rounds of Russian non corrosive in the crate for $150 plus shipping if anyone is interested. Ended up with it in a gun trade.
