I have a model seven in 308. it has a pretty good thump due to the light gun. i can shoot my sendero in 300 win mag more than the seven. the little seven just thumps you when you shoot it. it's a pleasure to carry hunting but thumps.
they say with a heavier grain bullet you get more recoil i can't support that. i think weight of the gun plays a big role in felt recoil.
Take for instance a 30-06 in a ruger m 77 ,yeah it has recoil, BUT shoot one in a M77rl , a lighter gun, and you'll tell the difference in felt recoil. the weight of the gun asborbs some of the recoil.
Learn to like recoil ! sounds funny but it works. i am working with my son getting ready for gun season and i have told him that over and over again and his groups are better than most grown men i know.

Recoil has several factors. Bullet weight, velocity, powder charge and the weight of the firearm. Then you have to factor in stock design and tolerance levels of the shooter. Changing brands of ammo should make little difference in felt recoil as long as the same bullet weight is used. Personally I have a hard time telling rifles apart strictly from recoil anymore. I just know that my 300 WM has more muzzle blast than my 7mm-08 Rem, but I hardly feel either. 90% of overcoming recoil is mental. If you think it is going to hurt you then it wil, no matter what the actual ft/lbs come out to. Mind over matter. I don't mind so recoil doesn't matter.

Here is a neat litle recoil calculator
.http://huntamerica.com/recoil_calculator/
I load a 165 gr slug with 49.6 grains for about 2800 fps.
