I am looking to purchase a Savage rifle, but this is the hard part, the choice of caliber thatI want. Three calibers really stick out the .243, 25/06, and the .270wsm to me. This gunmay only ending up being a varmit gun but who knowsI may go hunting where rifle is allowedfor deer. What would be a recommended choice of caliber in my situation?

If your hunting nothing larger then deer I would say the 25-06 would be my pick. Though all the calibers you mentioned would do either very wellI just like the middle of the road one,the 270might bea little big if you want to keep the holes smaller in the varmits but I bet they wouldnt go far. good luck
I bet zrex says the 243 he really likes that caliber it can be effective

Either the .243 or .25-06 would be my choice... I just had to chose between the two and I chose the .243... You can use 55 grain bullets for varminting and use 95 or 100 grain bullets for deer... Very versatile. The .270 is overkill for varmints...

Since you stated that it would be primarily used for varmints, I feel the .243 is the best choice. Many also use them for deer and swear by them.
Whatever you pick, just get out there and enjoy it.

243 youll use it for varmits andlove to shoot it and then get whitetail rounds drop a couple of deer then next thing you know walla your new favorite gun. I love my 270Wsm but I like the smaller ones for varmits.

My personal preference would be the 25-06, but any of the three will work. I was out this morning testing some loads for mine. The wind wasn't blowing 40mph, making things a little easier on me. My varmint loads, 75 grain V-Max's, grouped respectably. I'm going to have to put a little more work into the big game load (Accubonds).

JMHO ,But I think the 25-06 is one of the best, most overlooked rounds ever made.Fast, flat shooting.Has enough juice for the deer and will still shoot a light enough bullet for the little critters.Don't get me wrong the .243 is a great round.I just like things that not everybody has.You have to get up pretty early in the morning to beat the 25.
