I am looking to buy A Savage model 99 from A friend of A friend It is supposed to the last series made so I assume it is fairly new it appears to be in excellent condition it is a 308 Win. Can anyone tell me things to look for as far as problems I really know nothing about these rifles it just looks like something I would like to have in my collection thanks chad

The M99 Savage is a very fine lever action rifle. It is solid and can handle long cartridges. A few things to check though, depending on it's age, the looseness of the lever action, firing pin condition, and of course the rifling. Overall I would say it is probably one of the finest heavy caliber lever actions made IMO. Please Marlin owners don't trash me!

I just picked one of those up a couple weeks ago. Mine is in 250-3000. My brother has one in 308. His is a 99E and shoots very well. They are all pretty good rifles and I don't think you could go wrong picking up any of them. The Savage site said mine was made in 1951 or later.
