35 Whelen rifleing twist.
#1
Question for the other gunsmiths here or others that may have had a 35 Whelen built in a 1-10" twist.
I just aquired a 35 caliber blank at a very reasonable cost and the twist is 1 in 10 inches. I plan on building myself a 35 Whelen on a Remington action and was wondering if anyone else has done this with this twist rate. If so how does it perform and what bullet weights did you use?
Thanks guys.

I've never used the 1-10" twist...it's a trifle fast I think.....IIRC Remington uses a 1-16" twist and IMO that's a bit slow.
I'd have no problem with the barrel you have.....use it as it'll stabilize all the bullets you shoot and will even handle the unusually big ones from Northfork and others that make 270-280 grain bullets for the .358 cals.
Have a ball.....

Bigbulls,
i built a 700 Rem with a Douglas tube in 35 Whelen AI last winter... i really want to tell you that i went with a 1 in 10 twist rate @ 24 inches OAL. it'll shoot honestly, 225 grain BT's into nearly a .4 ish group @ 100... 5 rounds and you can barely believe that multiple bullets went through the hole... i cannot believe it, seriously, i thought i was shooting off the paper at first... it'll shoot 250 grain partitions and Hornady interlocks off the bags at about .75". i have not tried a lighter bullet so see if i am spinning it too fast or a heavier bullet either...

Yep, 1 in 12 is pretty much the standard but the other gunsmith I work with had this one at his house he wasn't doing anything with so I bought it from him for $75. To be honest I didn't realize they went as tight as 1 in 10 twist on a 35.
I figured for $75 why not try it.
