I shoot a 7mm rem and love it. The ultra is a fair bit faster but I would think kick a fair bit more. You hould also look at a STW before making up your mind.

I have two 7mmstw's and a 7mmultramag and have owned a few 7mmremmags.I find the recoil similar to a 300winmag.In other words a little sronger than the 7mmremmag but not by a great deal. The stw and ultramag are very similar performance wise but factory loads for both are pathetically mild.In fact they are so pathetic ,that I wouldn't bother to own either if I didn't handload.Of the two cartridges ,I prefer the 7mmstw as I feel that the ultramag case is simply too large to be much benefit with 7mm bullets. It only adds 50fps to 75fps over the stw.I have taken several elk and a couple of dozen canadian whitetails plus bighorn and pronghorn with great results.I also own two 300ultramags which I use for my moose and elk hunting but if I had to hunt all game with the 7mmultramag,I would try the 140gr tsx.

I don't own an Ultra but do own a 7MM Rem. My cousin owns the ultra. His is a Remington 700 BDL Deluxe. The 7MM I own is an old Ruger 77 w/tang safety given as a gift by my Step-Dad who owned it for over 20 years and fired it 8 times. THe Ultra I guess by stock design seems to kick less than my 7 Rem. I know this isn't the case but my cousin installed and R3 recoil pad and I've now installed an R3 on my 7MM. I do agree that if you only fire factory ammo get a 7MM Rem. and not the Ultra as factory loads seem pathetic and are very limited nowadays for the Ultra. 7MM Rem. Mag ammo is available about anywhere that carries 30-06 ammo.

Note*
If you do handload as I and my cousin do the 7 Ultra can achieve some awesome velocities with a 26" factory barrel.
