That round in that gun should have plenty of recoil for your hands and you right to be concerned about losing velocity in a short barrel. The bore diameter is small enough that your not going to get full powder burn in a 14 inch barrel and you will lose lots of velocity compared to the same round shot in a 24 inch barrel.

It will lose a bit of velocity. now if you are wanting to deer hunt and you want to use a handgun i mighht recommend the .44mag in T/c configurations, or even a revolver, how ever if you want a varmit gun you may be better off with the .223
