RE: ? about the .280 remington
The 280 is an awesome cartridge for all but the big bears in NA. I've owned one for nearly 15 of my 30 years. I would try and buy one with a 24" barrel as I believe it is needed for this round. There are factory loads available from Federal, Hornady, Remington, & Winchester. If you handload bullets range from 90 gr. to 195 gr. I like the 140-150 for deer and I've used the 175 gr. partition for elk with excellent results. In a rifle with a 24" barrel you can reach close to 2800 fps with the 175's and have a higher b.c. and better s.d than the 30-06 firing 180's.

I have a Remington model 700 Classic in 280 Rem. It has a21.5 inch barrel on it. I shoot remington's 140 gr. Core-Lokt ammo for deer hunting. I shoot one deer with it so far.It was a shoulder shot and a"bang flop" at that. I would recommend the 280 Rem. for sure, and for longer range shooting a 24 inch barrel would be better!

RE: ? about the .280 remington
I just sold my Rem Model 700 280 to buy a Rem 700 7mmwsm with a hart barrel, mc millan stock and it is quite a gun, but when I look back I spent far to much money to gain so little. The old 280 express would shoot 1/2 groups with 150gr ballistic Tips 53 grains 4831 and almost the same with 150gr Nosler Partitions with quite a bit more 4831 at 2900+ fps
The 7mmwsm with 140gr partitions 3200fps and a hell of a lot more recoil to gain so little. The only thing I like the short action of the 7mmwsm.
Eldequello said it all, the 280 is a better choice than 270 and the fact remington always down loaded there ammo, because of there auto loaders, it is a great caliber

Like everyone else I love my 280. The only downside, as a few people have said, is factory ammo availability. I have never had a problem finding factory ammo but the gunshops in this area carry a wide variety and selection of different calibers not just the 243, 308, 270 , 30-06 stuff found in Wal-Mart.
