My favorite is my czech 98/22 that I bought for $100. First time I shot it I put 10 shots inside 2 inches at 50 yards. I moved out to 100 yards and put 5 shots into 2 inches. This was with surplus ammo and iron sights. The only problem is that it zeros for something like 300 yards so the point of impact is about a foot high at 100.

I also have a couple of turks that shoot in the 3-4 inch range without a problem, but they have horrible sights. These rifles I bought for around $50.

I picked up a Yugo m48 for $100 a couple of months ago also. The bore was really dark and crappy. The first time I shot it, it made something like 20" groups and I was really sad. when I got home, I plugged the barrel and filled it with copper solvent and allowed it to sit for a couple of hours. I then scrubbed the bore with a somewhat abrasive brass polish. The bore is still dark, but gets better the more I shoot it and clean it. It now will group around 4-5 inches, but I think it has potential to shoot better.

Yes, surplus rifles, if you just want to shoot and enjoy them, are a real steal. I've been more than pleasantly surprised with the accuracy I've obtained from LOTS of surplus guns. My results have been....
1. Russian 7.62 x 54 long gun excellent!
2. M98 Turkish 8 x 57 great!
3. Model 1916 spanish mauser 7 x 57 good.
4. Model 1A Enfield .308 great!
5. Model 95 Hungarian 8 x 56R great!
7. Model 96 Swede SUPERB!
8. Model 38 Swede excellent!
9. Several SKS 7.62 x 39 fair-good.
10. 6.5 Japanese short carbine fair-poor (can't win em all)
I have done the sporterizing game a couple times. Pretty expensive overall, (if you don't do the work yourself) and the accuracy is no better than a factory rifle that you could usually buy for more than $100 less, but the pleasure of the project and the pride in the gun can make it worth it. For keeping em original and enjoying cheap shooting, surplus rifles can't be beat.

I picked up a Turkish Mauser for $35. The ammo is so cheap I won't even bother to reload for it. I haven't shot it for group yet but heck, at that price, if it goes bang I'm pleased.

Yup, it's 8mm and you're right, almost as cheap as a .22rf.

I've also got an M1 Carbine and an M1 rifle. Now *those* are a lot of fun to shoot!

I've got a Mosin Nagant 91/59. I've never shot for groups with it but I made sure I could put most of my shots into a 6 inch black circle at 100 meters before taking it caribou hunting this past fall. I sighted it in for 3 inches high at that range figuring I could hold dead on out to 200 yards if I had to (a pretty long shot in the area I was hunting). As it turned out I was able to get a bit closer than 100 meters before shooting and the 7.62 x 54R Sellier & Belliot 180gr soft points worked perfectly. The bullet passed right through the rib cage (broad side shot). The woodland caribou stag ran about 50 feet and dropped dead.

I took this rifle through a bit of dirty weather while hunting this fall and since it appears (to my untrained eye) to be in good condition with matching serial numbers I have decided to retire it from hunting. I will still shoot it however, this gun is a real blast to shoot, literally.

The sights on a lot of these old surplus rifles are not the best for hunting or target shooting and if you modify it to take a scope you destroy any collector value the rifle has. If you only want a hunting rifle modifying it for a scope it the way to go. But for those who want to have their cake and eat it too, there may be an alternative.

www.mojosights.com

From this web sight you can purchase aperature (peep) sights that can be used to replace the original rear sight of certain old surplus rifles without making irreversable changes to the rifle. That means the original rear sight can be put back on the rifle at any time. The website lists feedback from buyers who claim these sights allow the to shoot their surplus rifles more accurately than they were able to with the original. Over christmas they were seliing these sights for $29.95 plus shipping USD. Installation instructions are included.

If I was going to keep on hunting with my 91/59 I would definately check one of these out. I still might if I get serious about target shooting with it.

I'm thinking about getting a taller front sight for my 98/22 and using it for deer hunting next year. With a 29 1/2" barrel and about 8 lbs of weight it won't be much of a brush gun though. LOL

Most Mauser 98's are 8x57 = 8mm mauser.

Gotta luv 'em is right! Was at the range today tryin' some new loads for 2 different Mausers; a Swedish 6.5 and a FN made Venezualen M-98 in 7mm. Both loads used Sierra 140gr BTSP's but in 6.5x55 and 7mm; pushed by IMR-4350. Shot them both at 100yds. The Swede was groupin' 1-1/8&quot; to 1-1/4&quot; and the Venezualen was averaging 1-1/2&quot;,because of those darn V-rear and tappered front post sights on it. I like peep-sights much better! But the &quot;squared&quot; profile of the sights on the Swede ain't too bad. I got a Nagant also but with Chinese ammo it groups about 3-1/2&quot;at 100yds. Can't wait till Winchester releases the USA ammo in that caliber sometime this year! I guess the Nagant was the cheapest at $50, the Swede was next at $150, but the 7MM M-98 wasn't cheap but it is in REALY pristine condition for a surplus gun $400 and I bet I give some collector fits by just shooting it!<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>But I didn't get it just to look at!
