I'll have a go! I am going to build a CHEAP RIFLE that shoots Cheap Ammo.
Millitary Russian Moisin Nagant 1891 in 7.62x54 (about equal to the '06)
Zytel stck and scope mount from Sportsman Guide catologue
Tasco Pronghorn 4x32 scope

Moisin Nagant used at a gun show. $75.00
Scope mount and stock- $79.99
Tasco Pronghorn 4x32- $23.99
Drilling and tapping for scope mount $50.00

TOTAL________________________$228.98

Save the 50 bucks gunsmithing if you can do it yourself.
With this gun, you could hunt anything from whitetails, antelope to black bear, elk, hog and caribou. Might not be the prettiest or coolest rig at deer camp but that's part of the charm

how about a Springfield Model 1917 in 30-06 w/ peep sightsthat would probably go for under a hundred bucks at a gun show.

Yugoslav M48, M48a or M24/47..... anywhere from less than $100....to $150, depending on condition. Scope mounts installed...and some sort of moderately priced scope...no more than $150. So, total.... $300 or less. A lot less if the iron sights are to be used.

I'll buy EVERY uncut M1917 you can supply me for $100, sight unseen.

Remington and Eddystones go for $300 to $450 around here, Winchesters are $100 to $200 more.

Pawn shop M94 Winchester, $150 out the door.
