A used remington 788 in .308. Probably run you 300 bucks for a good condition one. Top that off with a Leupold 3X9 VX1 scope. total cost 500.00

If I were to buy one new today, I would pick up a remington 700 ADL/CDL in 300 win Mag. Top off with the same leupold scope. That outfit would still be around 550.00

I don't think that I would want to hunt with a bottom dollar rifle, but if I had to use one I think that this is what I would recommend...

Stevens 200 rifle in .308 Winchester............$300
Nikon Buckmaster 4x40 scope.....................$125
Butler Creek Flip Open Caps.......................$0.01 with scope purchase
Warne mounts and rings..............................$40
Adjustable nylon sling.................................$10

This would be a great all around big game rifle for under $500, and if you shopped around you could probably get it cheaper than I found this stuff in five minutes.

Reproduction 1907 sling that was on the rifle.....................$0.00

I'll have a go! I am going to build a CHEAP RIFLE that shoots Cheap Ammo.
Millitary Russian Moisin Nagant 1891 in 7.62x54 (about equal to the '06)
Zytel stck and scope mount from Sportsman Guide catologue
Tasco Pronghorn 4x32 scope

Moisin Nagant used at a gun show. $75.00
Scope mount and stock- $79.99
Tasco Pronghorn 4x32- $23.99
Drilling and tapping for scope mount $50.00

TOTAL________________________$228.98

Save the 50 bucks gunsmithing if you can do it yourself.
With this gun, you could hunt anything from whitetails, antelope to black bear, elk, hog and caribou. Might not be the prettiest or coolest rig at deer camp but that's part of the charm
okcmco
i had plans on doing that also but after i got the gun i felt very unsafe with it. the safety on mine was very hard to opperate and it didn't work 100 % or the time. but that's just me. oh and their triggers are crap. go on google and type in replacement moisin nagant trigger... think they're teflon coated or something. i can't remember the sight but they seemed like they would help alot.

Yugo 24/47 8mm Maser - $149.99.

Mojo Peep sight for back - $49.99 plus shipping, I believe the front site would add $20 more, plus $10 for a set of extra apertures.

I already have a decent load worked up for deer/pronghorn/anything similar or smaller consisting of a 150 grain Hornady SP and IMR 3031, just waiting on the sights to put some more loadstogether.

James. I could be wrong but I believe you have a British model P14. Same rifle as the M1917 made by Eddystone, Winchester and rem but made for the british army before the US adopted the same in 30'06. Still a great gun.

Thanks Hunter 06FLKY. I will check it out. Actually, I have grown used to the trigger. I use the bolt as the safety. I leve it out of battary or do not chamber a round until I am ready.
Did you know this rifle has won international high power rifle cometitions?
