I plan to buy a 270 winchester { Walmart} for long range shooting. Here asre my questions.

1, The range I shoot at is only 50 yds. Will there be a big change if I shoot at a target at 400 yds.

2. What would be the best bullet to buy if I'm jus thunting white tails?

Chuck, for close range, I would use Rem 130gr Core-Lokt PSP. For ranges 200 and beyond, I use 150gr NP.

When I have it sighted in at 50 yds Will it make a lot of difference at 400 yds. Or should it be still real close?

chuck - if you go to the amunition mfgr web site, they have ballistics charts for all the ammo. Includes speed at various distances, ft. lbs of power, and bullet drop. You have to look at the chart for the specific shell you're firing.

I don't shoot a .270, but my WAG is that there will quite a large drop at 400 yds compared to 50.

Also, it sounds like it might be difficult, but if you think you're going to shoot at 400 yds, I really think you need to practice hunting position shots at that distance. Myself? I wouldn't even consider anything beyond 200 unless I practiced a lot at longer distancesand also I'd need pretty decent field conditions (good position, good target, good rest) before I'd try it. But I'm super conservative, sometimes more than necessaryprobably. Good luck.

IF you plan onm shjooting at anything beyond 100 yards, you MUST FIND and use a range that has at least 200 yards miniumum. You cannot expect to zero ANY WEAPON at 50 yards then expect to hit a target at 400 yards! Even the windage will be off if you do, let alone bullet drop!

I used 150-grain Noisler partition bullets for ALL GAME in Alaska in the .270, and only had to shoot one animal more than once (two shots). It was a 300+ pound black bear. In the lower 48, a 130 grainer is all that is needed.

I really love it when the SAME question is asked by the SAME person in several forums. You only need to post it once.

Don't sweat it, didn't mean to come across as an a$$. It's just a real pain to have to read through multiple post that ask the same question.

Chuck7...Remington.com has a great ballistics comparison site. For example: .270 cal. like you are looking forwith a 200 yd zero; a 150 gr soft point core-lokt will be 2" high at 100yds and 29" low at 400yds. A 130 gr pointed soft point core-lokt (these two bullets are virtually identical for ballistic coefficient, w/ a 20 gr. weight diff.) will be 1.5" high at 100yds and 21" low at 400yds. To reinforce what Eldequello stated...you must at leastbe able to shoot on a range with a true 200yd. distance. Most shooters could not hit a wooly mammoth at 400 yds. unless they have some trigger time (at true distance)on a particular gun and truly know the ballistics of the firearm. With out true distance shooting practice a couple of things will probably happen. 1st...and most unlikely, you will get VERY LUCKY and make a humane kill shot on an animal (you will probably not be able to duplicate the shot twice), 2nd...and the most likely and best case scenario...you will probably miss the animaland damage your ego a little (I am not trying to be condecending, just truthful) or 3rd...you will land a lousy shot and maim, cripple or gut shootan animal (it will then die a slow Sh---y, agonizing death and you will feel worse about it than the animal you maimed. Even on a 100yd range, zeroed at 200 or 250yds...you might punch great groups all day long...out at 400 yds. youprobably would not hit that wooly mammoth I mentioned. I 'm getting alot of good advice from you folks. You guys are right. I did not know what I was saying about 400 yds.That's nearly the distance of a 1/4 mile drag strip which you could barely see the race cars at the end of the track.
