Hey All

I picked up a set of Leupold Standard mounts for my 300wsm. Has any one had any problems with the windage adjustment coming loose?

I am debating about getting a set of dual dovetail. However I think if I use a little bit of the blue locktight on the standard mounts I should not have any problems. Any feedback would be apreciated.

While I've never actually had the rear screws come loose on the Redfield/Leupold style rear base, I've never been a big fan of them for fear of that happening. I much prefer the dual dovetail (which Leupold recommends for hard kicking guns) or Weaver style bases.

I have had problems with the STD mounts with rear base screw coming loose. The gun 300 Wthby had been shot all spring and summer in 90 deg weather and I took it to Wyoming for a Elk Hunt where it was freezing. After missing an Elk at about 300 yards I took it behind camp to a makeshift base and was 2 ft off the target. The windage screw had loosened. If I had to do it over again I would use a dual dovetail base on any hard recoiling rifle or use a Gentry,conetrol type ring because they are impossible to screw up. I have never had the windage screw come loose on either of my 2 300 wsm's but I never have taken them hunting in freezing weather either.

I've only used them on a couple of rifles and didn't have any problems. That being said, I like the dual dovetails a lot better and can't see why anyone would choose the windage adjustable base over the dual dovetails. If you need that much windage adjustment then something is out of whack on the rifle anyway and it needs to be addressed by a gunsmith.

I was sighting in a friends Mini 14 and the rear screws always came loose. I have the same mounts on my 223 and they haven't moved at all, just tighten them down tight and put some loc-tite on it.

Why work when you can hunt???? Heck why work at all!!

Yes, it cost me an elk once!! I now epoxy the right screw in place, and use loctite on the other one!!

I had that experience with one of my Redfield bases. The screw came loose and fell out. Redfield replaced the screw at N/C. I asked about putting a drop of LocTite 242(blue)on it. Redfield didn't recommend doing that.I haven't had anymore problem since replacing the screw.I would recommend making sure it's tight and checking it from time to time. I've used Redfield JR/SR bases for about 30 years and that was the only problem I ever had or remember having. Ruger Redhawk

I use only the standard leupold bases with windage screws and have never had one come loose.I tighten them properly and do not use loctite or any type of epoxy.I have these bases on ultramags,stw's and my 338x8mm rem mag so they have been exposed to fair amounts of recoil.I hunt in temperatures from -30 to +70 F and hunt with horses a fair bit so my guns are exposed to most hunting conditions.
