Give the Savage line of rifles a good look, You should have money left over and a gun thats hard to beat for accuracy and dependability right out of the box. Also Savage makes a Stevens line of rifles, Should be able to pick one of those up for around 250 to 275.

If you can't find anything new that you are happy with. You can usually find really good guns at a pawn shop. Just b/c its used doesn't mean its not any good. I have a really good friend that works in a pawn shop and he tells me all the time of people bringing almost brand new guns in there, and I don't mean cheap ones either. And with the economy like this, everyone needs money, so the pickings are good right now.

I would look Stevens or maybe used. Try to not get sucked into the packages that uses a really cheap scope, you will end up spending more$ down the road. Some bolts have open sights, that may be a way to get yourself hunting this year with a better gun and then purchase a scope when your finances allow. I always find myself saving money now and not being happy with the product later. The open sights this year may help you avoid that.

Open sights may be a good suggestion, but personally, I wouldn't go with it. Just for the plain fact that you can't see them during "shooting hours".

I'd recommend Howa or Savage. You can find package deals from both that include the gun and scope ( usually not the highest quality scope ), but servicable. Like was said check out the local pawn shops, great deals to be had just got to be a little picky.
