Hi. I just bought a tikka 30 06 stainless steel/composite stock. Its my first year hunting, and I've been trying alot of different rounds to see how they all compare. A guy told me that a barrel is only good for a few hundred rounds. If thats the case, I've already wasted half the life of the thing! I thought I would get some feedback from you guys. I'm heading out this weekend to try and take a deer from here in n. ca. (Hopefully it will be bigger than my lab)Thanks, Ron

Who ever yold you that doesn't know crap. Rifles now and days are made to last. They will last your lifetime with proper care, even if you shoot them alot. I must have 20,000+ rounds through some of my guns, still as good as the day I bought them.

A few thousand rounds through it and I would start looking. I only ever "burned out" one barrel in all my years of shooting and they were hot loads for woodchuck hunting...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

The Army used to rate the useful accuracy life of a 1903 Springfield .30/'06 at 10,000 rounds. But with today's steels, it may very well be up to 20,000. It will last longer if you don't shoot a lot of ammo through it after it gets real hot - let it cool between shots, and it will last longer than you will!!

It depends upon the caliber and your intended use. A benchrest barrel may have a life of 1000 to 2000 rounds. I'd say a 30-06 would have a useful deer hunting life of many thousands of rounds. In other words, your grandchildren should be able to hunt with that rifle. You can however damage it very quickly with improper cleaning.

yeah, your rifle will definatly outlast you with proper care and assume you dont use loads that are super hot and fire them in rapid succession

Ditto, wow I guess my milsurps are ready for the trash, NOT. As has been said with todays quality metal, better forging and machining techniques, as long as your not running super hot loads through it, which judging by your post your probably shooting factory ammo. The gun should last a lifetime plus as long as it is cared for.

You can shoot as many rounds till your barrel melts!! But for accuracy it depends on the barrel, caliber, and speed just to name a few factors that determine accuracy life. Accuracy is the thing that diminishes. People who shoot match with a .243 Winchester notice accuracy diminishing around 2000 rounds. We don't need accuracy like that so you can shoot the gun till your accuracy is below your standards. anyone that tells you that your accuracy is gone with less than 1000rounds has to have a caliber that goes around 4000fps to have around 1000yds. A 30-06 you will shoot for 1000's of rounds and have wonderful acurracy.
Why work when you can hunt???? Heck why work at all!!
