Those of you who use Rugers - are you happy with the way the bolt works? I was looking at a synthetic/stainless 77 MK II in 30-06 today, used at a good price. Pretty much spotless inside and out as far as I could tell. It seemed like a nice gun but in working the bolt, it just seemed a little loose to me.

It seemed like a very nice rifle. I'm no expert, basically having owned only one rifle in my life, a Winchester model 70. I'll take a second look at the Ruger. I'm interested in "upgrading" to a synthetic / stainless since the conditions I'm subjecting my gun to nowadays are pretty wet and grubby.

I have no doubt that the Vanguard is a good rifle, and it now comes with the accuracy guarantee. I own Rugers, but having only owned one M77, I am certainly no expert on Ruger bolt guns. (The rest of mine are No.1's.)
The M77 is the "round-top" version (takes regular scope mount bases) in 7X57mm with tang safety, and was one of the first they made in 7X57mm in 1972. It was always accurate. This is the first group I ever fired from it, (100 yards) with 175-grain Remington factory ammo, no less! It shot even better with handloads. However, my son "borrowed" it once about 1976, and I have not seen it since!
My No. 1's have all been quite accurate. I have only had one Ruger that was a real dog. It was a Mini-30. Got rid of that piece of junk pretty fast!

I havethe ruger 77 all weather in .30-06 and I like every feature about the gun.The bolt cycles smoothly and since I got the trigger lightend, it shoots very good groups. What price are they asking?

I too went through this question myself and I went back and forth just like I went back and forth on calibres to from the 270 to the 30-06 and from ruger to weatherby and the some how I ended up getting a Wincheter M-70 30-06 and I like it just fine

I see that you have already made your decision, but I have to add that I have owned 5 Rugers of different models and they are all gone now. I still own a Weatherby Vangaurd though.

Roy Weatherby the old snake medicine salesman that he was, makes a sorry rifle.....His big sales gimic was speed speed speed. How did he do it???? By jumping the bullet about 1/4 inch into the lands....that's how. If you do alot of shooting, forget any Weatherby...let alone the cheap one. Do some research and then you will make the wise decision. Regards, Rick.
