I have a Ruger M77 in 25.06 & have never had a problem on deer sized game. In my area we also have large bodied deer.
The 25.06 is an excellent deer sized round. Just make sure you pick a big game bulletinstead of a avaliblevarmit bullet.

Why is the .25-06 better?

270 Winchester/25-06 Remington

By Clay Oldham
Winchester introduced the 270 Winchester in 1925 and 44 years later (1969) Remington introduced the 25-06 Remington. Not only is the 270 older its more popular than the 25-06, even so the two cartridges share many similarities. Both are based on the 30-06 Springfield case necked down to accept their respective bullets. Cases last a long time and hand loading is strait forward just like any other 30-06 case based cartridge, also bullets and factory ammunition are relatively easy to find. There are more factory offerings for the 270 than the 25-06 and they may be a little easier to find. Both shoot extremely flat and have cleanly taken countless heads of game to earn the reputations they hold as hunting rounds.
I prefer the 25-06 over the 270win as the 25-06 will kill any deer just as dead in any hunting situation, and do it with less recoil.Being older or more popular in no way makes a cartridge shoot any flatter or kill game any deader.

My wife's current favorite deer rifle is a Ruger #1 in 25-06. She's been using it for about 10yrs now. It's a deer killer.

I have a Tikka in 25-06. Great caliber. There isn't anything that a 270 will do to a deer that a 25-06 won't except kick you a little harder when you shoot him. The 25-06 shoots very flat, recoil is mild and it puts the hardsmack down on deer sized animals.

The 270 is certainly much more popular but it's been around a lot longer and unlike the 25-06 had a very famous gun writer to champion it's virtues. But I can tell you this, everyone I know thathas taken the road less traveled and boughta 25-06 for a deer rifle never goes back to anything else.

I think no one had mentioned the 25-06 because of its lower popularity and not its performance. One of the most destructive wounds I have ever seen on whitetail was done with a 25-06. The shouder was completely destroyed and it was just hanging by a little muscle and hide. The result of an explosive bullet and poorly placed shot.

The performance of the 25-06 is very close to the 270 however the 270 offers more versitility as heavier bullets are an option. On deer the 25-06 is just as effective and a little milder to shoot. I wouldn't hesitate to use either on just a coin flip. I have both. The 25-07 is a Ruger Bolt Gun and the 270 is a Remington ADL. I also have the 6.5 Swede. These are three of the best deer rifles on the planet. All will double for use on Elk however the 25 is a bit light for that use. Its been used for elk many times however and with good bullets and good shot placement, it would do the job. Many here have used it. Its in a crowd as far as performance which may cut into its popularity.

I think that the key here is LIGHT RECOIL. The 25-06 is death on a stick for deer, but it DOES kick worse than the 7-08, 250savage,260rem,ect...
