RE: Remington 700 LSS fires when you take it off safe
In defense of Big Green, however, the condition is pretty rare. Like maybe one in a thousand or more. |
RE: Remington 700 LSS fires when you take it off safe
ORIGINAL: statjunk This along with some other issues that I have encountered myself and read about is why I avoid Big Green. Ifone of theirguns killed someone that I cared about and the company new about this issue, I would declare war. Tom |

Strictly for the purpose of rebutting your comment. What about a ricochet? Yes it is unlikely.
Here is an unlikely scenario. A friend and I were standing in the woods when I was younger, around 11-13. There was a bird nest in a nearby tree with a bird sitting in it. My friend picks up a rock and jesters that he is going to throw it at the bird. I aske him what the hell he was doing and told him that I didn't want him to throw it. He threw it, right into the ground, hard. It bounced off another rock that was laying there shot up into that tree and killed that bird. We both stood there in shock. There is no excuse for those guns being released to the public even knowing that this problem occurs in only 1 in 1,000,000 rifles. I can assure you that no one atRemington would want one of thier guns to kill someone that I care about because of this problem. Tom P.S. Yes you are right, guns don't kill people. |

At one time, before I knew a damn thing about rifles, I thought the 700 was as good as anything else out there. As my interest in rifles (hunting rifles) became more serious, however, I became aware of the deficiencies in the mechanical design of the 700.The designer must have said to himself, "what's the least I can get by with and still call this a rifle". I haven't owned a 700 in several years and have no desire to buy another.

That is a special feature offered by our folks at Remington. Get the trigger adjusted or better yet replace it. I have 2 Remingtons right now. One with a nice aftermarket trigger, shoots great, and another that I have had to play with a bit but still not real happy with it. It will be replaced soon too. Keep it real clean it helps.

RE: Remington 700 LSS fires when you take it off safe
Guns don't kill people, people do! IF anyone has the muzzle of their LOADED RIFLE pointed at someone, or pointed in an unsafe direction and pushes the safety off with fatal results, who's at fault? Certainly NOT THE RIFLE!! You've paid mucho $$$$ for that once in a life time hunt and the guide has done his job and there in front of you is the once in a lifetime trophy, but the opportunity is aging by the second, as you begin to raise your trusty M700 to your shoulder you slip off the safety before your finger even enters the guard and the rifle instantly discharges into the ground 30 yards in front of you "all by itself", your trophy runs away never to be seen again, you go home empty handed, and the guide thinks you are a class A idiot..... Is that satisfactory rifle performance? Sounds seriously defective to me. No matter where the rifle was pointed. The fact that people couldget killed (safety training issuesaside) makes it just that much more unacceptable. |
RE: Remington 700 LSS fires when you take it off safe
Even if you were all by yourself hunting. Many places have large cities in and around an area hunted. Suppose that a person was getting ready to shoot an animal and flipped off the safety before the rifle was to his shoulder and the gun goes boom but the muzzle was pointed at an upward angle. That bullet has got to come down somewhere and in a populated area it could easily strike a person.
How many of us here ever flip the safety back and forth when we are sitting there with anticipation during those last 30 minutes of light when we just know that the big one is about to show himself. And don't say that you don't do it cause we all have. |
RE: Remington 700 LSS fires when you take it off safe
The points made above are valid. However, don't think for one second that this can't happen with any rifle.Mechanical things can and do go wrong with any piece of equipment. I once had a rifle of another popular brand that fired once in a while when the bolt was shut fast and hard.
