You should check the local laws, but I would unload it and put it in a locked case and store it in the trunk with the ammo seperate. It would be hard for any law enforcement agency to screw with you this way.

I didn't have time to read all of the responses, but here's my 2 cents.
The state Police areusually the best contact for info on gun ownership, liciencing and concealed carry.
If the laws are such that you cannot currently possess the gun back there, then I'd try to find a friend to hold it for you while you apply for whatever permits you need.
Also, my condolenses on the move back to NY.

I have a NY permit issued in Onondaga county. The most a permit can take it 6 months in NY. If it is longer then they have to explain to you why it will be longer. Mine took less than 2 months to go through. Good luck on getting a CCW. Only people I know who have gotton them are corrections officers. I have friends who are police officers and they can't get a CCW. The judge tells they to put a firearms they want to carry on their badge. Right now it is tricky for them cause departments don't want people putting any firearms on their badge and the judge won't give them a CCW. Only in NY could this happen.

Thanks for the responses they helped out alot and now I have a good idea were to start. I knew better than to just bring the gun there with me and I knew you needed to have a permit before owning one in that state. I just was not sure what I had to do if I decided to move there. When my wife bought it for me (a 44mag superblackhawk hunter) I was excited because I thought could bring it with me to (upstate)New York with me on my anual hunting trip until my Father said no way you cannot not even for a hunting trip. I have always bowhunted when I went up there anyways because I am a die hard bowhunter and love the challenge of having to get real close to get the shot. I thought it would be a cool challenge to try handgun hunting which I will try my luck here in Georgia . I undertand the laws and the purpose of them and will follow thembut it is just a bummer you cannot use a handgun to hunt with in whatever state you would like to hunt.
