Been there done that, (more than once) and of course i'd take my "drilling"!!
My drilling does it all, side by side shotgun, with high powered rifle under. AND, i have Krieghoff insert bbls to slide in the shot bbl. to shoot 22lr and also 22 Win. mag....
In case youdon't know about them, Krieghoff insert bbls shoot as good as a "quality" bolt action rifle!!
Also besides the open sights (that pop up when you choose the rifle bbl.)the scope is in quick attach"claw mounts" that always rezero's the scope when you snap in on. It also has interchangeable choke tubes.
I've shot all kinds of small and big game on hunts useing this "one gun" for everything, and it weights just 7 pounds.... :>

Those of us who named centrefire weapons might be a little hungry at times, but no more so than with any other choice. With the addition of fishing gear (a rather more certain way of gathering food than hunting, anyway)....none of us should be too hungry. I definitely would also pack fishing gear...I can't speak for the others.

As much as it would kill me to have only one weapon, I'd opt for a 12 gauge pump. It just give so many options (except for long distance shooting) that it seems to make the most sense.

...You are going to be in the woods for, say a month! You have basic camping gear (Pack, tarp, fire, knife, cord, blanket or sleeping bag, etc.) You can only have one weapon.
WHAT WOULD YOU TAKE?...
WHAT WOULD YOU TAKE?...
] Survival scenario. Think lightweight & effective. I'd still opt for a Marlin 30/30, or maybe a lightweight bolt action carbine in 223Rem., both scoped of course, and with backup iron sights. Laminated or synthetic stock on the bolt action. Stainless steel on both if available (but not shiney).
Oh well, just my .02

12ga. shotguns?? Think about the original premise folks. You gotenough gear to hump, and now you want to carry around all thatshotgun ammo.[

GOOD POINT, Virginia 7
I must admit I was only responding to the title of the thread and didn't read the premise.
With that premise in mind I would probably take a featherweight Savage 99 in22-250.

Maybe I made the wrong assumption about the question but I was under the impression that whatever gun you chose is what you had to feed yourself with. All you guys sayin "centerfires" would be AWFULLY hungry if you couldn't shoot those fish, birds or small game. What you gonna do with those big game animals? Leave them lying in the weeds to attract other problems and rot?
I don't think you would want to take to many squirrels that you HAD to eat with a 30/06!!!
