Default Winchester 70

Im thinking about buying the new Model 70 Ultimate Shadow in 7mm WSM. Anything that yall could tell me about the gun or the caliber would help. Ive heard that the 7 WSM is a god round, but Id rather hear from others experience than advertisements. Thanks fellas.

I hunt with a fellow who uses a Win 70, classic stainlessin 7WSM. He bought the gun for deer hunting only. He has taken 6-7 deer, but shot them all within 50 yards of his stand (in the thick woods). I have repeatedly read that the #1 WSM is the 300, followed by the 270. The 7WSM hasn't "taken off" as well as expected. The tried and true 7mmRemMag has a large following, for good reason.

I have used the 300 WSM in the ultimate shadow and the Featherweigth and they both were super guns, each shot 1 inch groups or better with the Winchester Power-points or the Fail safes.
The only thingI did not like about the shadow was the no hinge plate,I hate blind magazines.
As for choice I would not buy a 7 WSM just causeI don't think they have caught on.I would chose the 300 or the 270 WSM

I would probably reconsider the caliber choice. Id go with a 7mm rem mag or maybe 270wsm or 300 wsm. The 7mm wsm is kind of an oddball. Youd have a little trouble finding ammo. If your a handloader and thats what you want go for it, but it has no advantage over the 7mm rem mag. Seeing that the ultimate shadow is chamered in nothin but wsm's and if your set on that particular gun, id go with a 300 wsm.

The M-70 is a fine rifle.....and the 7 WSM is also a fine cartridge but a lot more than deer require. An excellent big game cartridge for the larger stuff it's a fine elk, moose, etc round.....it'll do deer jus fine as well. You could do much worse than that combination.

Winchester M70 is an excellent choice! I too, would recomend the 7MM RM! It is tried and true, and will be here long after the latest superdupermagnum craze is forgotten! I'd go even further, and say get the .280 Rem. and save money on ammo. For all but the largest, badest, North American game, they won't tell the difference between being hit with a 7 mag or the .280!
