RE: 338??

James B,
The 338 win dose not shot as fast as the 300 Win[:-][:-].Well lets see.
Published FPS from Federal
180 BT 300 win mag @ muzzle 2970
180 bt 338 win @ muzzle 3120
300WM 200 TBBC@ muzzle 2700 fps Ft/lbs 3238
338WM 210 Nosler @ muzzle 2830 Ft/lbs 3735
As for trajectory 200 yds sight in
200 gr 300 WM @ 400 yds -26
210gr 338 WM @ 400 Yds -23

I know I know they are close but the .338 clearly outshines the 300 just due the use of heavier bullets.
I mean come on a 250 gr Nosler your not goning to be shootin 500 yds with. But when the chips are down the 250 gr nosler is a great 300 yds bullet.
This factory loading and if you hand load you can get more out of both.
The 338 dose not hit as hard as the 375 H&H but the 375 still is not as fast or flat.
A 250 gr bullet from both hit @ 3958 for the H&H
and 3929 for the .338 win. still awful close.
Ok enough of my ramblings.

RE: 338??

True but the 308 caliber bullet of that weight has a much higher SD and BC. You are comparing a heavy weight for calber bullet to a light weight for caliber bullet. Its fine by me that the 338 has its supporters, I far prefer the 375 for game thats big and mean. I also prefer a lighter faster round for long range or game smaller than moose and bears. Its not like I never used the 338 because I have. Just not my idea of of a caliber suited for either deer size or grizzly size game. Just as many think that the 270 and 7mm-08 are to light for elk, its a matter of expierence and preference I have proved my oppinions to myself and in the end, thats what matters.:DThe 338 is fine for elk but has not proved to me that it will outperform the 300 for that purpose. The elk I have shot with the 270 size rounds have gone down like a bag of rocks so I never could see the need for more blast and recoil than I needed.

RE: 338??

True I was slanted some on that comparison.I'm not upset by all means.
I think the 300 and the .338 all have a nich in the hunting realm.I like the 300 Win but prefer the Super 300's to it.I like the good o'le 375 H&H put realy it is quite a bit gun for 90 lb pronghorns(not that I wouldn't like to use it on one). But for me the .338 is a happy medium between the 300 and the.375.
True I have not had any experiance shooting Kodiak's or big Grizz, but I know the .338 is more than capeble of taking one.But I have a another gun for them when I get the chance(416 Rem Mag 400 gr TBBC).So I realy don't have a need for the .375 H&Heven though it is proven game stopper.
So thats my reasoning for the .338 it's a happy medium, between a good hunting rifle and a true blue dangerous game rifle.

RE: 338??

ok now i'm kinda having doubts on the caliber i chose. I have been thinking  that the 338 is kinda big for the game i hunt and the 7mag to me fits in to the game i hunt(elk, moose, black bear and, mostly muledeer) shots would be with in (25-350yrds) and i have been thinking and thinking and thinking and now i'm extremly confused on wich to choose[&:], i would like your opinion plz, and another reason y i chose the 7mag was b/c in the remingtion model 710 the gun i belive is $329 (around taht area) and the 338 in a synthetic stock, stainless steelbarrel howa is $429, And they both have Scopes 3x9 -40 or something like that, so i kinda want your opinion on which to choose (i already chose i just want to know what your opinion is and i will c if mine is the same;))

and Another reason is that my best hunting partner in the world that i have been hunting since i was 6 years old , is my dad he says that for being 15yrs old the 338 is to much gun for me and the 7mag for my age is a good dependable gun that fits me perfect(my wieght age etc...), and is "almost" identicle to a 300wm when it comes to ballistics. And beign that i do take long shots at times and have been sucesfull (with a 30-30 @ 200yrds) i don't know what to chose?????? i kinda want your opinion on which to choose (i already chose i just want to know what your opinion is and i will c if mine is the same;))

RE: 338??

Given the choice between the 7MM Mag and the 338, I would take the 7 Mag. I would not consider it for grizzly hunting or Polar bears but since the 270 has taken those animals, I quess the 7 Mag would to. I like the 280 better than the 7 Mag but the final choice will have to be yours. I never noticed a lot more recoil from the 338 than I did with the 7 Mag. I went through five seven Mags trying to like them. Never happened. though.

I've got an old Sako (AV) in 338 - don't shoot it much. It's a good round but it can beat you up at the range.

I hate saying this as I am a remington patron....... Also you mentioned you would like a gun that will last you into your adult years. I would deffiantely choose that Howa before buying a remington 710. Even though the Howa's are made over seas they are well built and overall excellent rifles a buddy of mine has one of there stainless sporter rifles with the laminate thumbole stock in 30-06, the first time he shot it it grouped less then a inch at 100 yards with 150 grain winchester power point ammo, very impressive. Another friend of mine has a remington 710 in 270 its accuracy was not very impressive at all no matter what he fed it the best he could group with it was 2 inches at 100 yards, My friend thinking it was him and not the rifle he asked me to shoot it and the best I could do with it was a 1.5 inch at 100 yards.

IMO the 710 is plain and simply a rifle for someone who shoots their rifle twice a year, the weekend before deer season and at the deer during season. also IMO i think you would be much better off with a 7mm rem mag over the 338 win mag because 1 ammo is cheaper 2 its plenty of gun and then some for the game you listed.

I personally have not used anything larger then a 30-06 for those same game animals you listed and have had just as good of experience with my 308 on the same also.

RE: 338??

It seems the 7mm is the way to go for you but whatever you DO NOT SPEND YOUR HARD EARNED $$ ON THE 710. They are a very cheaply made piece. Everybody chambers the 7mm and bet you can get one from Howa if that is the piece you like..
