I have a Ruger P 97. It is somewhat bulky and has a kick but for the price (around $350.00) you can't go wrong. I have practiced and can get all my shots in the ten ring. The trigger pull was tricky at first but practice makes perfect.

I agree with bigcountry, if you're not dead-set on an auto, go with a wheelgun. Maybe something like a J or K frame Smith or a Ruger SP101 short-barreled 357mag. Easy to conceal, very simple operation, packs plenty of punch and very little chance of a malfunction. If a wheelgun is out of the question, shoot all of the autos you can get your hands on and go with whichever one is in your price range and fits you the best.

If they fit your hand, you can't beat the Rugers for price and dependability. I have not seen a bad recommendation here yet. I loke the Sig 220 as well.

the only gun you should get is the gun that feels comfortable and that you can shoot well. Otherwise what good is it.. you are on the right track.

Going from cheapest to most expensive my choices would be:

Springfield XD

Sig P229 (especialy if you can find one with high cap LEO mags)

H&K Compact USP

Kimber Ultra Carry.

My favorite woudl be the Kimber, but they ain't cheap and you gotta be comfortable carrying them cocked and locked.
