Heres another compairson using a better bullet for the .243 to the .30-30

.................................................. ..100yds........200yds.......300yds

.243,100gr Fed.BT..................fps...... 2760...........2570........2380
.30-30,150gr rem coreloct.......fps.......1973...........1605...... ..1303
.
....................................energy......
.243.............................................. .1690..........1460........1260
.30-30.............................................129 6...........858........565
drop....
.243.............................................. ..0".............-3.1"........11.4"
30-30..............................................0" ............ -7.6"........28.8

Theres realy no comparison the .243 is almost twice the gun. It's ridicuolous to choose the .30-30 over it. At the muzzle energy is about the same but tapers off very quickly for the 30-30
A 50yd shot, a bear wouldnt know the difference. a 200 yd shot on deer or bear, theres a huge difference. The .243 is superior. At 300 yds the .243 is better than the .30-30 is at a 100yds. No contest.

For shots under 200 yards, it's the 30/30 Hands down, the larger round has more mass and will hold together much better when penatrating dense tissue and bone. The 243 is a fine round however due to it's small size and light weight bullet mass retension would be a concern and thats something the balistics charts do not include!

zrex........ lets compare apples to apples, load both of them the same ( same weight bullet) then shoot them both of them 100 yds. (which is a long shot on a bear) and put a willow patch half way between the target and you. then tell us which one you would take the 30-30 or the .243

Boy oh Boy another old wives tale..30/30 as a brushbuster I wouldn't intentionally shoot thru brush with a 45/70 never mind a puny 30/30

Why would the bullet hold together better? What happens if the deer steps out at 300 yards or 250 yards ?. I guess you just wave at him and wish him luck if your packing a 30/30.

where i hunt a 200 yard shot would be hard to do there is thick woods and brush everywhere i would only be shooting a good 150 at the most if that.

This is a goofy response. Were not comparing hypathetical guns or loads. Were comparing actually guns and loads to one another. The .243 wins hands down. Much more velocity and energy all the way around.

For shots under 200 yards, it's the 30/30 Hands down, the larger round has more mass and will hold together much better when penatrating dense tissue and bone. My 30-30 rarely gets a pass through on deer, my .243 busts through hogs at over 200 yds.
This is also something balistics dont tell. Dont tell me about retention. I have used both guns. The .243 always passes through. Leaving tremendous damage and tissue loss on the way.
You can keep using the bullet lobbing 30-30, not me, I know better.

Let me say this also, if I were bear hunting I probably wouldnt choose either of these calibers, but the question was which one of these would be better for deer and bear, and the .243 would be better than the 30-30 by far.

Well I'm not trying to stir up a bee hive on this subject however I just responded the way I have seen from both these rounds. The 30/30 has taken Deer Bear and Elk for many years as long as it has a responsible shooter pulling the trigger. Have I used a 243 yes and feel that it's a good round, would I shoot a deer @ 300yards with it?? Hell no thats why I have a 270, and a 30-06 because I don't like to chance it with it's terrible expansion compaired with my other options including the 30/30. Also to add the wife is usally using the 243 because she's small framed, and produces low recoil when we go out for deer. We all have our own views of the 30/30 and 243, the success of harvesting a Monster Buck or Bruin depends on the skills and responsible decision making of the Hunter. To each is own, my choice between these two for shots under 200yards for both Deer and Bear still sides with the 30/30, If distance or changes in terrain is a concern I have other options.

zrex,
Is a pass through always better? If a bullet with a .308" diameter round goes through the lungs but does not come out the other side and a .243" diameter goes all the way through the animal are you saying that there is more damage to the vitals with the 243? It would appear that is the argument you are making. Please explain
