When they are biting, they can make for a great day. Around here on the Ohio River, if they are on that day, You will almost catch a fish a cast. When they are biting and your not fishing for them, they start to become a nuciance.

Definatly fun.

I would like to ask you about the wipers,,,,i recently well about two years ago stocked our eight acre pond with these.Have had bass,crappie,bluegill.walleye,,,perch.....and plenty of baitfish, plus about 100 grass carp( white Amur) in this pond about 7-8 years ago,,,,,,,,,
Can you tell me how you fish for wipers or are they about the same as regular largemouth, using same lures or baits?I have no idea what they are actually like in a way.The fish hatchery told me these fish would get to 17 ponds provided plenty of food etc,the pond averages 10-12 feet deep plus deepest part about 2 or so acres is probably around 21-22 foot.If you can tell me more about them, let me know,,,,,,,,,,thanks,,,,,,,,,,,,,,500smith

CARP???????ARE YOU ONE OF THOSE TYPE???? A WIPER IS A CROSS BETWEEN A STRIPER(BASS) AND A WHITE BASS.MY UNDERSTANDING FROM THE OUTFIT I BOUGHT ALL MY FISH FROM SAID THEY;D POSSIBLY GET TO 17 POUNDS AND JERK THE ROD OUT OF YOUR HAND.HE WAS TALKING ME OUT OF GETING A FEW NORTHERN AND MAYBE A COUPLE OF MUSKIE.I LIKE THINGS WITH FIGHT,,BUT FOR CARP THEY USED TO GIVE ME LOADS OF FUN WHEN I WAS A KID ON A ROD AND REEL. HAVENT DONE THAT FOR A LONG TIME.NOW THEY MIGHT GIVE ME A SHORT TUSSLE AT THE END OF A BOW RIGGED FOR THUNMPING THEM BUT ITS SHORT LIVED.
I AM LEARING MORE ABOUT THEM READING INFO ON THE INTERNET,SO FAR NOBODY ELSE HAS ANSWERED ME.ALSO LOOKS AS THOUGH THEY WILL BITE ON SURFACE PLUGS.WHICH WOULD BE GREAT. CARP??????????SHEESH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO excess recoil,,,,,,,,,,,sorry thought you meant as in carp fishing.Didnt read into yours good enough either............had posted a question about how to catch these fish also.Only things i have found are on the internet is all so far.Nobody seems to tell me much else about them.Even looked in ebay under wiper or striper lures.Guess i just figured you could catch them much the same as a regular bass, maybe and maybe not in a few ways.Rubber worms dont sound like they;d work.Seems like i read something to the affect that surface plugs or lures just under the surface might work tho.So carp that yours nickname ok.Sorry,,,,,if i sounded off or whatever just frustrated with whether or not i still have any in the pond. And if i could even get a glimpse of them. You going to a big lake or dam with wipers .Seems like have heard a friend telling me he;d sen that they had them down that way.But no real info as far as seeing poeple catch them.Later,,,,,,,,,500smith

from what i have figured out on wipers, small shiny spinners and spoons are good artificials for catching them and crappier minnow work the best under a bobber. In Iowa they catch lots of them below dams mostly. Good luck. I am still gonna try them.
