Mauser.....you CAN use mono for a fly leader......just not one solid diameter piece for the ENTIRE leader.
YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CAST A FLY.
You need a gradual taper down to the fly to transmit the energy from your line into the fly so that the leader will lay out smoothly.
Regardless of what material you are using, you still need a TAPERED leader.....if you end in 6lb test mono, that's fine. Just don't start with it as well!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
I'm not sure if you already knew this or not....I can't tell by your post.

thats about what we do for salmon although when we have our short leaders, 3-4ft its solid same weight....for the smaller salmon we use straight mono also and join them with dbl surgeons or blood knots if we make them up before hand. a couple spools of mono are much much cheaper then equal amounts of tippet or leaders!!! The same thing with the flourocarbon! Dont buy it in the smaller tippet dispensers! Bass pro sells the stuff cheapola!
