My biggest bass to date was a 26 inch smallmouth which was close to 6 pounds caught a couple of years ago. Here any smallmouth over 5 pounds is concidered a trophy fish. For as far as largemouths they are new for us up in this part of the state. I am led to believe that 5 and 6 pounders are quite common with some reaching as much as 10 pounds. I have never caught anything like them for as far as largemouths go.

My biggest one was around 12 pounds and it was the first one I ever caught as a kid. We were fishing for catfish using perch for bait. It was big enough to stick your all the way down and work the hook out.

As far north as maine is and you stating they are new to the area I think you are probably being fed some fibbers... that and the fact maine's state record is 11lbs caught in 1968!

This part of Maine they are quite new as they were introduced illegally into some of our trout and perch waters. When I say quite new I am talking within the last 10 years. Though the biggest one out of Pocomoonshine Lake has been 10 pounds so far most are only 6 pounds and under. Boyden Lake during ice fishing season a couple 8 pounders have been caught. That is it for as far as largemouths in this area is concerned..

This lake is stocked with the Florida
strain largemouths.
That I didn't know. I used to fish Briery Creek back in the 90's and caught some remarkable bass, many over 8 lbs. (VA citation). I haven't fished there in years, a friend had a nice farm in Farmville, not far from the lake that had an EXCELLENT turkey population. I heard the avg. size of largemouth bass catch went down since then, maybe b/c of all the publicity? It's a beautiful place down there, wouldn't mind living there.

Hey Coolbrze,Yes the publicity really did catch up with
it but that has now changed for the better. The commision
changed the size limit that everything from 14 to 24 inchs
has to be released back. You can keep anything under 14
and only 1 fish per day over 24 inches. They still let you
keep 5 a day though. When I used to go to taxidermy school
in Richmond around 1995 you would not believe how many
8 to 14 pound fish came to the shop to be mounted.Thats
what really opened my eyes up to what a awesome fishery
this is.I think it will remain strong now with the regulations
that have been imposed. They put the Florida strain in just
four years before it opened.I have never fished a lake with
so many trees and stickups before like that has. That also
is what makes it so good. Also some nice Bluegill in there
also.Take Care! Mike

Well - it seems as though there are some huge bass all over the country. Thanks for the replies and I hope the post keeps going If you like, add your favorite bait. Here - I use Yamamotos Cinco's, Kreatures and Stretch O's weedless and weightless; ZoomBrush Hogs, Ribbon Tailed Worms, and Lizardson a carolina rig; andoccasionaly drop shot finese worms - almost exclusively in Watermellon Black Flake or Green Pumpkin for all of the above.
