I think you should stick with your 300 win mag moosehunter21 but if you really want get yourself that handgun it will work to.

If you've never pistol hunted, I'd suggest starting out on small game with a 22lr to get used to shooting a pistol in a hunting situation. Hunting with a pistol comes naturally for some, for others, its a nightmare. Another thing to consider is the recoil. The recoil of the 06 in a Encore is not for the faint-hearted. The 30-06 in a properly equipped Encore is, in the right hands, a good 250yd deer pistol. I'm not passing judgement on you, but like you're buddy mooseslayer3, I think you need to sit back and take a good look at what you're getting into before taking the plunge.

All you T/C fans correct me if I'm wrong, but in a pistol I dont think the 06 will give you anything that the 308 cant, you wont have enough barrel to utilize it above the 308.

Mike - you are 100% correct - and usually better accuracy to boot!

I would go with the 7-08 pistol befor a 308 or 30-06, for even less thump.

Moosehunter21-
I don't understand. Why would you want to do that? Sounds brutal, loud as h---, and really inefficient. Are there a lot of my "gun's badder than yours" contests in BC? I'm sorry, I just don't get it.

nvmike and roskoe, I was just replying about the 30-06 because that was the subject. My prefered caliber has always been the 308. I've owned two 308 Encore pistol barrels and both were great perfomers. But you may have heard of a fellow named Larry Weishun and the 06 is his caliber of choice in the Encore. And with his history of taking deer with a pistol, it's hard to say that the 06 is a bad choice. just a thought.
