MSRP is 500 to 600 dollars, and based on MSRP of other similar priced taurus models my gun dealer figured they would be right at or around 300 to 350 dollars retail. its just a guestimate more then likely wont be to far off.

I hate to be a wet blanket here, gentlemen; but the Taurus is in about the same quality class as the S & W 1911 clone. Think of a Kia or Hyundai - with a spoiler, mag wheels, wide tires, and a racing stripe. Save up your money a little longer and get a Kimber or upgraded Springfield Armory. You'll be glad you did in the long run.

already have 2 kimbers a custom II and a eclipse, just want decent 1911 to keep my kimber 22 conversion on all the time or when i go hiking id like to have a 1911 im not worried about getting scuffed up. I own several taurus pistols and i am more then happy with the quality from my experience with taurus pistols I have no doubt in my mind their 1911 wont serve well for what i want it for.

HDW - it may work just fine for that purpose - as long as it goes bang every time and you don't wind up putting a gazillion rounds through it. As a lower to stick the Kimber .22 conversion on top of, though, I think I would just buy a quality single stack receiver and fit some good parts (Ed Brown) to it. Could put one together with premium stuff for about the same cost as a 1911 Taurus.

Have you priced after market 1911 parts lately?????????? Gonna spend a bunch more than what that Taurus would cost.

Yea - I send in a big order about once a week. You can get a decent single stack frame for under $200 - even a Les Baer is only 204 (dealer) - and the internals for about another $200 or so. If the frame is already cut for the Ed Brown beavertail, I could put together the whole lower in about 30 minutes - with a match trigger pull. If everything was stainless steel, just bead blast and it is ready to slide under the .22 conversion kit.

Those guns on the front page of the American Handgunner with the hand cut checkering and other bell and whistles, however . . . the lowers start at about $800.

So how much would you charge a customer to put together a "custom" 1911 lower with all the parts? He's gonna have $500+ (retail) in parts alone and that's not making you all that much money.

I figure about a grand or so all total for a finished 1911 .45acp or .22lr. and that's not the really good stuff.

Any way, the Taurus does look good in the pics. Hopefully they will shoot and function as good as they look. They do make a good gun, granted they are not the caliber of the Smiths that they are copied from and the fit and finish is not as nice but they do make a solid gun that functions well and can be made to function better.

BTW, where (city) do you work? I just had to move to Alabama from Colorado after graduating CST.

Big Bulls - most of the 1911's I build are for IPSC competitors. I prefer STI high capacity frames, Les Baer slides, and Schumann AET barrels. These guns run about $1600 for a limited gun and around $2300 for an open gun - but they are quite a bit more sophisticated than what you might want for self defense and casual competition.

My shop is in Pueblo West. How do you like Alabama (other than no elk, of course)?
