c-lecta choke and slugs ?
does anyone know if you can shoot a slug through a bird barrel with the old celecta choke ? i picked up and older 20 ga with this barrel and was wondering if it would be safe to do it I learned a hard lesson a few years ago with a screw in choke and slugs (put a 10 inch or so rip in the barrel ) now I'm alittle nervous about anything but slug barrels for slugs

RE: c-lecta choke and slugs ?
johnl,
I have an older Mossberg...a bolt-action 395KB with C-lect choke. I picked it up for $20 at a garage sale, refinished/reblued the gun, and used it for years as my turkey gun.
Here is what I found out, both from experience and Mossberg.
First, the guns were designed to shoot anything from turkeys/geese to deer. Shooting slugs will not harm the gun although Mossberg recommended, if legal, to use buckshot in place of slugs.
If using slugs, with the choke dialed out to improved cylinder, I could not hit a 4x4 feet target at 40 yards! Buckshot, illegal here in CT, was little better...
So I crammed the choke back to extra-full and that's where its stayed for years.
You may have better luck, but my gut feeling tells me you probably will not
EDIT: Be sure if you do use slugs, to only use rifled slugs. Sabots can/will mushroom the end of the barrel (as stated by Mossberg CS)!

strut&rut thanks that's pretty much what I thought I'll try a couple of test shots but I'm not counting on much I'll have to look for a slug barrel down the road

johnl,
Yep...not recommended, as I said, but the techies told me if wouldn't damage the gun. They probably also couldn't hit a 4ft. square target...
