Believe Wal-Mart was selling a version of it for a while, at least in this area. Haven't heard anything good or bad about it, but realize that Savage firearms have limited resale value so be sure it's what you want, you'll probably take a dump on resale if you don't.

I have the Marlin .17, blued w/wood stock. I only lightened the trigger (the trigger should at least be cleaned, this will take the jerky or grinding feeling out of it), you can purchase an aftermarket adjustable trigger for around $100. None the less, it is extremely accurate even out to 100 yards. A good friend that shoots with me uses the Savage, it shoots just as well. I went with the Marlin because I felt that the fit and finish were much better than the Savage. Both rifles hold > 1 MOA at 100 yards and @ 50 yards they are real tack drivers. Have fun, sorry to hear about WalMart of Canada.

I have a Marlin 917V. Last weekend at the range I was shooting the primers out of used shotgun shells at 25 yds. I think it's the most accurate rimfire I've ever shot. I agree the trigger could use some work, I've got an adjustable trigger coming by UPS, should be here tomorrow.

I bought the Savage .17 about two months ago, and still haven't shot it. Everyone I talked to around here that either had one or shot one all had positive things to say about it, which is why I got it.

I just bought a Marlin 917VS last Saturday. I've only had it to the range once. I went with three different brands of ammo, as I heard that they can be real picky on which brand they like.
All three brands I tried (Hornady, Federal, and Remington all 17 grain, all plastic tipped) gave me under 1" at 100yds. (5 shot group)
The Federal's were the tightest group in my gun. The Remington's and Hornady's were tied for second.
All in all, a great gun. I don't think you will be disapointed.

I've got the marlin. I have problems with mine feeding rounds into the chamber and sometimes with extraction. It is a good shooter regardless. I pop clay birds (stationary) out at 200yds. Longest shot on a groundhog to date is 173yds. I'm still waiting to get a shot at a hog at the 200 yd mark. Squirrels, 60yds no problem...and exceeding that range soon...
I put the Rifle Basix trigger in mine, it's sweet...
