Default Bought a .17 hrm

Just bought a Savage .17 down at Bass Pro shops for 159.00. Black synthetic stock and bull barrell. I hope I got a good deal. Anyway I am going to go back tommorow and look for a scope. I was thinking of getting a fixed 4 power scope. What do yall think? Also what brands, recticle size, etc should I look for for this gun. Thanks

I also have the Savage black synthetic with the s/s bull barrel. I had originally bought the Bushnell Trophy 3-9x 40mm. I like the quality of the optics but thought it didn’t have enough magnification so I just got the Bushnell Trophy 6-18 x 40mm. I would find that going with a 4x scope would not take advantage on the accuracy of the 17 hrm for longer shots at small targets. That’s just my opinion.....

I have been using the Marlin .17 for over a year now, I have fired over 1000 rounds with it target shooting. On occasion I've nailed a ground hog, squirrel and rabbit or two out to about 80 - 90 yards. If you check the ballistics of the .17 it shoots virtually flat for about 100 yards (less than 1" from zero). I did not put a top of the line scope on my rifle, I have a BSA Platinum 6 - 24 x with the fine crosshairs, it works just fine. The objective is 44mm. I had a 3 - 9x scope on my .22 Mag and wished I had more power, that is why I went to the other extreme on the .17. Your .17 should hold sub MOA @ 100 yards in the right hands, the Savages are very accurate. To hit something the size of a quarter at 100 yards you have to see it. I setup 12ga shotshell hulls @ 100 yards and plink away using about 18 x. I have a target that you should try with the .17, it's more of a game but very challanging and will improve your shooting. I can't post the target, it si too large but anyone can e-mail me I will send it to them. P.S. The .17 V-max bullet decimates ground hogs and the like! Good luck and enjoy the .17.

Well I took some of Trailers advice... Kinda. I went back down to Bass Pro, bought a 6-18X scope but it was a 50mm objective. Bought some Weaver rings but didn't look to check and make sure that they were the right ones. Got home they were for up to 42mm. So head back down to Bass Pro, look and they have no 50mm rings, so I get some cheaper brand that you can look underneath of them. I don't like those see thru rings but got them to make the scope fit. Got back home, put it together and the scope sits to high. I have to lift my cheek off of the stock to see through the scope. So I guess this evening, I'l head back down, take the scope and rings back, try to find one with a 40mm objective in my price range. I might have to go to a lesser magnification. I'm leaving next week to be stationed in Mo, so I am trying to get this thing together while packing for the move, and going through all the bull that the military make you do to go to another base. Thanks for the input though guys. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks
