best gun brand?
I hear a lot of people don't like Remingtons? Why? What is the best!
|
RE: best gun brand?
Marty, I don't think you'll ever get people to agree which is best.I personally like Ruger's.Some people swear by Remington, Browning, Savage, Winchester to name a few.Depending what type of Rifle you're looking for. If I were looking for a lever action I would look at the Marlin's or Browning BLR's. Bolt actions I would go for the Ruger's or Tikka's.For a semi auto rifle I like the Browning BAR's.It all depends how they fit you and the price range you're looking to stay in.Most will agree that two of the worst rifles being made today is the Remington 710 and the Remington 597.

RE: best gun brand?
Nothing wrong with Remingtons, its just that their quality has gone downhill- not anymore than anyone else per se, but tenough to lose loyal remington buyers.
870's used to be a dead reliable bulletproof shotgun, but over the last decade they have started using cheaper parts and breakages and problems are more common where they used to be extremely rare. Same with 1100's, 700's are still good, though the quality of the wood in the stocks isn't what it used to be, and from what Ive seen, the plastic stocks on their 700 adl's are flexible junk. Its pretty much a move made by alot of manufacturers- if they want to sell you a gun in the $500 range, they cannot use forged parts, they use more stamped and cast parts- Though I think Ruger has the investment casting process down and make a nice product from it, more manufacturers are using MIM and die cast parts which are cheap and invariably much more problematic than forged parts when you consider breakages. My personal preference for new guns is Browning- they still seem to make a high quality product through and through, though my next rifle will probably be a CZ- they've been in business for about 75 years, and have always made high quality stuff- even under the shroud of communism. |
RE: best gun brand?
alot depends on how you rank a gun
is the most expensive the best??? i would say for the money to quality ratio (and covering a ful line of rifles) savage takes the top in this category i own a few savages and they are great(not the highest quality but not the highest priced either) i would also agree with briman on browning i have several browning rifles all are high quality and i very rarely have any problems with them |
RE: best gun brand?
Personaly I think for the money you cant beat a ruger M77 bolt action(blued with wood stock). For a production gun Rugers have beautiful wood, Blueing, and they feel great. I like remington's, I like Savage for the price, I like brownings. I would say go to the store pick each one up and feel it. Does it fit you, can you afford it, is it in a caliber/finish you want, Barrel length, etc. Savage has synthetic combos with a scope cheap. They are decent woods guns. I have seen these combos in 270 and 30-06 for like $300 and A coworker just bought a 300 win mag combo for like $350 out the door. Check out of all places WalMart. They can order guns(if its in thier catalog) and they even sell browning and weatherbee.
Happy shopping Jay |
RE: best gun brand?
Iike many of the brands well. To me it a question of value. Am I going to gey my monies worth. Its hard to beat Savage for getting a good shooting rugged gun for the money. However Savage has forced the other gun makers to compete and part of the way they do it is by bringing out some so called stiped down models. Remington has thier synthetic line of 700's which I find to be a very good gun for the money. 419.00 where I live. Ruger has allways been a good solid gun for the money although I am tired of thier nearly unshootable triggers. Remington triggers are easy to adjust and then have a pretty nice pull. You can always pay more for one of the top of the line rifles if you happen to have the money loose at the time. I don't like fancy stocks and such so I go for the value.

RE: best gun brand?
I am a big Ruger fan, in my opinion it is the best most innovative company out there. I would buy only Ruger if they made all types of guns
|
RE: best gun brand?
Winchester!

RE: best gun brand?
Take a look at Tikka. They are made by Sako and imported by Beretta. They can be found for less than 500 dollars and are very good guns. They come from the factory with a free floated cold-hammerforged barrel, a very crisp trigger that adjusts from 2-4 lbs, a buttplate that is adjustable for length of pull and a bolt that glides slicker than silicone on fresh owl $h*t. Heck Wal-Mart can even order you one.

RE: best gun brand?
Remington!
|
RE: best gun brand?
That is a very very difficult question to answer. If I had to pick one without $$$$ being an option, it would be weatherby for a production rifle. Ruger makes awesome rifles that are much more affordable. As far as the best overall, there are too many custum rifles to even compare that sure are better than factroy rifles.

RE: best gun brand?
I bought a 870 wingmaster this year and it had the nicest piece of would I had ever seen. As good as any browning or beretta.
|
RE: best gun brand?
Remingtons for me.
|
RE: best gun brand?
Other then a custom gun Id say Sako for sure. I never hear much negative things said about them and they're not much more then high end remingtons or winchester. I hear alot of comments about remingtons, and Browning quality going down hill and problems with winchester, Tikka, Ruger, ect ect but never Sako. I never have owned a Sako but am going to buy a Sako 75 Varmint in a 308 in the next month( I hope) :)
Cheers!! |
RE: best gun brand?
Off the shelf they all have good and bad points. I have owned several brand rifles and most have been a good investment. I owned a wby and while it was a work of art it functioned no better than a run of the mill rem, winchester, etc and shot no better groups(in fact worse than many offer today). As a result and the price I would opt for a custom or Sako. However if your thinking high end like a weatherby or Sako, due some checking on what a custom gun will run you, then you get exactly what you want(possibly for similar or less money). Being left handed I built my 7 rem mag on 700 action for the same cake as a sako stock rifle and I surely don't feel less superior for doing so. If your going to buy a mid-range off the shelf, tit for tat, just buy the one that feels right to you!!!!.. I know many of happy owners of rem, win, ruger, tikka, browning, savage and the list goes on;)

winchester

RE: best gun brand?
imho the ruger m-77 series is one of the best for the money i have 3 and have had not had a problem with none of them
|
RE: best gun brand?
I own a Savage Model 110 .243 and I love it. Savage makes a good gun, although some ppl tend to leave them out. I cant be fer sure, but I think my ultimate dream bolt action rifle would be a Winchester Model 70 Compact in .243 . That would be one sweet gun. So I would go with Savage and Winchester.
|
RE: best gun brand?
they are all good and the more the better it makes ya feel. i have remington, ruger, savage, interarms, browning, and thompson center.
|
RE: best gun brand?
I would have to say remington and also ruger.
|
RE: best gun brand?
Remington and Browning are my picks, they've both got a gun for everything
|
RE: best gun brand?
I would say that in terms of value, I'd rate them Savage then Ruger. Savage has really given the other manufacturers a run for their money of late because they offer high dollar features (button rifling, free floated barrels, pillar bedded stocks, etc...) on their rifles at bargain prices. They aren't the prettiest rifles to look at but they definately have it where it counts. Savage rifles have a widespread and well deserved reputation for outstanding accuracy. Sub-MOA groups are common with sporter weight Savage rifles. Savage also offers by far the finest factor trigger system on any production rifle costing less than $1000. The Accu-Trigger is well worth the roughly $75 price increase in all so equipped rifles, and the trigger is now available on almost all of the Savage centerfire models.
Ruger is my choice for second place in terms of quality for the money. I love my Ruger M77VT. Ruger used to have a reputation for hit-or-miss accuracy (pun intended), which was caused by Ruger contracting out barrel production to other companies that produced sub-standard barrels. Ruger has since begun producing all their own barrels in house to much higher quality control standards, and the accuracy issues seem to be a thing of the past. My rifle shoots consistant .75MOA or less, and has had groups as small as 0.10MOA at 200 yards shooting handloads. All Ruger M77 MkII rifles also come with factory milled scope mounts in the receivers and a set of matching rings. My only word of warning is DO NOT BUY A REMINGTON 710, no mater how cheap it is. They are absolute JUNK and not worth 10% of their asking price. If you fail to heed this warning then be prepared for an "I told you so" from me! ;) Good luck with whatever rifle you choose. Mike |

Did you used to be on Marlin Talk? Thanks for your input. I like Ruger. Don't know why.

RE: best gun brand?
Ruger, but I also own Savage . It is like Chevrolets ,Fords and Dodge, Brunets Redheads, and Blonds, some are good and some are not. The best brand is the one you like.

ORIGINAL: Bowshooter48 It is like Chevrolets ,Fords and Dodge, Brunets Redheads, and Blonds, some are good and some are not. The best brand is the one you like. i have seen all kinds of guns break for odd reasons and i think it is just b/c they got an unlucky model off the line. most guns are starting to improve rather than decline. |
RE: best gun brand?
If you want a nice rifle get a Kimber.
|
RE: best gun brand?
For shotgun I like Remington and for rifle I like Winchester.
|
RE: best gun brand?
One of my all time favorite guns is my 30-06 remington 700. Had it forevery and have never had a single problem with it. Put a synthetic stock on it, when they came out years ago, mounted my scope and have never touched it since. That would be, other that hunting.;)
My favorit shot gun is my browning Auto 5. A very close second would be my old remington 870. |

RE: best gun brand?
I shoot Brownings... a '69 vintage Light Twelve on ducks... and an A-Bolt II with BOSS for elk. Love that BOSS feature. It REALLY works.

RE: best gun brand?
The best rifle for you is the one that fits you the best, and delivers the best accuracy that you can manage shoot. Unfortunately, you'll probably go thru a dozen or more before you find that one gun that is perfect for you. If you do, don't be a dummy like me and sell it. :(

RE: best gun brand?
ther are diffrent guns for diffrent things. I have brownings, mossbergs, benellis, remingtons, winchesters, rugers, and more. Each gun has a purpose and they all do what I want. So the best gun is the ont that fits you!

RE: best gun brand?
Things change. When I was growing up, late 1940s and 1950s, hunters in my family swore by the M70 Winchester rifle. Winchester rifles were cheapened for a time following the 1963 take over. Now, Winchester rifles can hold their own against any other brand rifle within the same price range. Even price range is not always a good yardstick. Three years ago I bought a Tikka WhiteTail Hunter in 30-06. That rifle is the most accurate, out of the box 30-06 that I have ever owned. As far as rifles go, the Tikka was not an expensive rifle, but I would not hesitate to use it on any hunt calling for a 30-06 chambered rifle.
The perspective buyer needs to decide what he likes. Wood stock or plastic? Blued metal or stainless? After making all the decision concerning caliber, weight and price range; one must pick up all the rifles that fit the criteria and see how each *feels*. Hopefully, as with choosing a puppy, one rifle will jump out and pick you! |

Shootem up 870, someday you need to make a trip down south to an area that still has dog hunting for deer. It is so much easier than man driving (which we occasionally do when we are temporarily out of dogs, or when hunting near a major road). I too like my 870, but I will forever be partial to my Browning A-5 "Sweet 16". I just cant find any good deer loads for 16 bores.
As far as rifles go, find what feels best that you can afford. |
