Sorry, what I mean to say is; don't spend a lot of money on a gun that you are doing to be using for "...some plinking but not much else".
A M&P AR-15 should be more than fine for that kind of work (fun) !

If it's just for plinking, you could also take a look at the M&P15-22. With ammo prices going through the roof lately, my Colt AR was getting a bit expensive to shoot, so my two sons and I each bought 15-22's. Fun, accurate, and cheap cheap cheap to shoot...We always leave the range looking like this... 

And, you can accessorize just like with the .223 version.

Like the previous post stated. But if you want a .223 and if the M&P is anything like its .22LR counterpart than it will be accurate, fun and reliable. I already owned a Stag Arms M-4 and snatched up a M&P-15 at my local gun shop. What a blast to shoot.
