I use 140g Winchester Ballistic Silvertips. A truly ugly round to get hit with. I have to say that I really like the effectiveness of the partitioned rounds.

How is the recoil compared to a 308 win?
|
The 7mm08 has little recoil. It's basically the same as the .243 if you've shot one. They are both light kicking calibers.

How/what do you mean ? "......there is little difference between the '06 and the 270." Are there differences? Certainly! Are they vast? I think not. |
Bible Man,
If that's the case.....we all have very little left to discuss about any of these (all basicly the same ?). 270, 280, 7mm-08, 308, 7mm Rem.Mag., 30-06 |

What I mean, is that to the average hunter/shooter, there will be little difference in performance between the two rounds. Recoil very similar, performance very similar. Sure, you can get heavier bullets in the '06, but for whitetail, and just about any other game you're going after on this continent, either will perform fairly similarly and adequately.

Little hole? With the right round the 7mm08 can leave a nasty large hole or do massive damage.
I use a partitioned round, and the exit hole on the 7 pt I shot this year was just over 2" in diameter. Little entrance hole, big ragged exit hole. I should have taken a picture of it as we cleaned the 7 pt. The 6 and the 8 I shot last year each hit bone in the upper leg. I left a mess of damaged tissue and bone the between the size of a softball and baseball unuseable. While the round I use kills the bigger deer in Wisconsin with impressive ease, I don't know that I would use the same round for the smaller species of whitetail deer. I may not be left with much to eat outside of any horns. |
well compared to the 30-06..2 deer right next to each other.

Most people dont realize that at 500 yards the 7mm-08 with a 140gr. bullet only drops about a inch more than a 270 with a 130gr. bullet, but the 7mm-08 has more energy at that yardage. 1 inch at 500 yards is not enough that anyone would notice unless shooting off a bench, deffinitely not noticeable in the woods. The 7mm-08 is a lot nicer to shoot than a 270, less recoil and muzzle blast, meaning that the average shooter will shoot it better than the 270. Also there is no compareson to bullet selection between the 7mm and the 270.
