I agree with oldsmellhound, plus porting doesn't really help with recoil as much as one may think

Bowhunter I thought that you had a 20 guage. Do you know anyone that has a 20 guage Savage 220? I have heard test with 3" Federal Barnes slugs shot real well with this gun. Boy slugs are not cheap!!!!! What kind of base and rings did you use? Good luck I hope you get the big guy.

Here is what a lot of guys are using on their 220's and seem to love them.

BTW - if it's a 220 it is a 20 gauge; if it's a 12 gauge, it's listed as a 212.

The 220’s accuracy should be no surprise because it’s not built like a shotgun, but rather like a Savage Rifle. “The 20 gauge chambering allows us to build the gun on a Model 110 receiver,” Said Savage CEO Ron Coburn. “This provides many advantages over a traditional shotgun with rifled barrel. On of the most noticeable, of course, is the inclusion of the AccuTrigger.”

Gonewest, I do have the Savage 220f (20ga) I heard the Federal Barnes Slugs did well also, but read more about the Remington Accu-Tip Slugs (3"), so I went with them only, and happy I did, cause I don't think I will get any better groups with any other slugs. As far as base/scope mounts, I went with:

Also the scope I have on top is a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40

I only have one question. Have you tried 2 3/4" slugs? IMO i believe they would be plenty. The 3" are just knocking the snot out of you needlessly and probably cost more. But if they shoot better than the 2 3/4" - well that's a different story.
I keep trying to talk myself out of one of these but you guys are making it more and more difficult.

Bronko, I have not tried the 2-3/4" slugs, from what I have read over the last few months most people are having the best results with the 3" shells, I couldn't find the Federal shells, the Accu-Tip 3" are just down right tack drivers

I cannot speak for the 20 gauge but, I have been shooting the 12 for 15 years. When I first got my 210F, I tried both 2 3/4 & 3 inch shells. They both grouped well but the 2 3/4 was a bit better so, I went with them. They almost always pass through so, there is no point in using the 3 inch shells. In addition, the recoil was noticably harder. After sighting in that day, my shoulder was black & blue. I purchased the PAST recoil pads shortly thereafter for sight ins.

My guess is that the 20 gauge will have the same relative difference. If the 2 3/4 do the job, the extra recoil of the 3s are unnecessary punishment.
