I think oldelkhunter has the right idea.
I' ve owned & used the 243,25-06 & 7mm-08 extensively & i' ll tell you that the 7mm-08 with bullets in the 100 to 130 grain range will do anything that the 25-06 will do & it will do more with heavier bullets & the 243 is not far behind the 25-06.
Dont get me wrong,I think the 25-06 is a great cartridge,I just dont think its as suitable as the short action cartridges for young people to start off with.

I recall and older guy that used a 257 roberts. It sure could bring down deer.He said it was the recoil of all the other guns made him choose the 257 roberts.Check it out and maybe make me out a lier.

Nothing against the 243 for a kid to shoot but I' ll have to give another vote to the 7 08. It' s agreat caliber, shoots a heavier bullet and has similar recoil. It' s agreat adult rifle too, you' ll want to borrow it.

I have heard from a lot of fellows that love the .243 and say it is a fine round for deer. There have been threads here where some fellows talk about head shooting deer with a .223 or .22/250 and they think that is a good idea.
I don' t have a whole lot of experience with a .243 but I didn' t like the way it killed the four animals I' ve seen it kill. Three of the four were recovered , same day(two with some difficulty). I bought a .243 for my daughter and son to hunt deer with. I am now in the market for a 6.5 X 55mm or a 260 Rem. or maybe a 7mm/08. I will keep the .243 for coyotes.

.243 or 7mm-08
I started my son with a .243 when he was 10 (because i happen to have two on hand)and he is very proficient with it now at age 12. I have personally killed 23 deer with a .243 rem 700 . the 700 has a little less recoil than the youth modle seven because of the longer barrel.with a good rest she should be able to shoot very well .
