I have heard from a lot of fellows that love the .243 and say it is a fine round for deer. There have been threads here where some fellows talk about head shooting deer with a .223 or .22/250 and they think that is a good idea.

I don' t have a whole lot of experience with a .243 but I didn' t like the way it killed the four animals I' ve seen it kill. Three of the four were recovered , same day(two with some difficulty). I bought a .243 for my daughter and son to hunt deer with. I am now in the market for a 6.5 X 55mm or a 260 Rem. or maybe a 7mm/08. I will keep the .243 for coyotes.
