I just bought a 300 Ultra Mag and it is in the gunsmith as we speak getting a muzzle brake. This is the first gun I have owned with a muzzle brake but I have heard several shot that do have them . Yes the noise is bad but I have never shot an animal without ear protection. I don' t hunt with the ear protection in but I have always had time to put them in before taking a shot.

My a-bolt was fitted with a boss , I took it off, I fire 20shots in the field to every 1 at a target and so I can,t wear ear protection all the time , the crack fron the boss was horrendous , in my oppinion if the recoil is too much for you then get a heavier rifle, fit a better recoil pad or go for a smaller calliber. The boss system is very effective but the added noise doesn' t make it worth it in my eyes.
