Don't know about how well each will shoot but I find the action on the 870 cycles much smoother than the 500 does.

I like the remington better than the mossberg because it IS built with better fit(forearm rattle, etc). The chamber on 500s are in barrel-NOT aluminum. Have you looked at browning bps? They are MY pick of the litter on current manufactured pumpguns.

Stalkingbear,I have not looked at the brownings maybe I should go to dunham's and see how they both feel,The mossberg would be better mounting a scope to with the cantilvered barrel would'nt it,the 870 they have has rifled sights on it.

That's exactly what you need to do is look at all of em to see which 1 you really like and fits ya good. We can talk for days and it still won't tellyou how it fits YOU. you can get both remington, mossberg, bps, and a bunch of others with rifled slug barrels/scope mounts. I've found out that if I don't get exactly what I want and need and settle for a lesser item-be it a truck, pair of boots, bow, gun,or whatever,I'll kick myself in the butt until I wind up getting what I originally wanted in the 1st place. I/we are just relating to you our personal experience on the different shotguns.

You couldn't give me a 500! Had one got rid of it.Bout as handy as a crooked pool cue.Only three pumps I'd own are Rem 870,Win model 12 and Ithaca 37..................Harold

The one I had was very roughly machined which is likely why the action was so sluggish.A buddy has one in .410 and it is the same.Seriously I don't want one free or otherwise. The other three guns never fail...................Harold

IMO, the 870 is the better gun, but some people have had very good luck with the Mossberg. So it all comes down to what you feel the most comfortable with.

Good Luck!!!!
