Greenhorngal, I apologize for stubby.

Anyway, I would go with the XCR in the .270 caliber but not just the standard caliber, I would go with the .270 caliber in the .270 WSM cartrige. One of the reasons is that based on it's sectional density and balistic coeficient you cannot go wrong from varmint on up to deer and elk. Another reason is it's shorter barrel of 24" vice 26" heavy magnum barrel and lighter weight. Personaly, I own a 7mm Rem Mag but that's because I bought the best deal that I could afford at the time which was a $475 sale on a Ruger M77 MKII stainles synthetic I bought at Bass Pro Shops in September for their hunting sales. It's another good rifle comparable to the Remingtons to check out unless your hubby is set on the Remmy which I can't blame him.

Good luck!

What qualifies you to speak for me?

A statement was made and I simply asked the poster to back up his claim.

The 270wsm would actually be a very poor choice as a varmint cartridge as the recoil would be excessive, and throat erosion would be a concern for varmint hunting where many shots can be fired without allowing proper barrel cooling. As to sectional density and ballistic co-efficient,the 7mm's will match or exceed the .277" with a slightly heavier bullet(10gr more) which would actually be an advantage for elk hunting.

LOL! Lighten up my man!

Based on my past experience the 270 WSM is lighter on felt recoil then my 7mm Rem Magbut you're right bout one thing the 270 WSM is definately heavier on the wallet. But actually the .270 WSM is about 100 fps faster, 150 foot pounds of energy more devastating, less affected by wind drift, and has less drop then our 7mm Rem Mags do at any given range.

Sorry stub, we cannot hide from the truth!

M77Man - Shoot a 270WSM thru a chronograph and come back an say they shoot faster than a 7mag......

I don't have the money to waste on a chrono graph so I'll take the manufacturers word for it. A similarly weighted round shot from both rifles (through a chronograph) and the .270 will still have a better sectional density the does a .284. Such as a .284 in a similar weighted round vs. a .300 Win Mag. Hey, I love my 7mm Rem Mag and I do have to admit that the ammo is cheaper and more readily available but judging from my past experience the .270 WSM is easier on the shoulder. I think it has something to do with the sharper burn of the powder and the shorter action, I'm not sure.....I also have to point out that the balistic difference between the two is not really enough to even matter because they're both two of the finest cartriges. So hey you got me, the 7 Mag wins but I can't say I lost all together because I own one, LOL!

M77man - All I was getting at is I have yet to personally see a max load come within 200fps of reaching the ammo makers claims. I've done quite a bit of loading/experimenting with my buddies Weatherby Vanguard 270WSM and can't get their claims with safe loads.

Hmm, so you think it's all a marketing scheme to sell more guns?

If you are talking only factory loads as it appears that you are,try and find a 270wsm factory load that shoots flatter or rfetains more energy than the hornady 139gr heavy mag interbond load for the 7mm remmag.
https://www.hornady.com/shop/?ps_session=8847f4c88c4b415e8e585ce724db8b73&p age=shop%2Fbrowse&category_id=5bc2df448258be45 fb6bd9ce8eeee93d

As for me,I will keep shooting my 7mmstw's.They drive a 140gr bullet at 3500fps(actually chronographed) which is well beyond what the 270wsm is capable of.

Thanks for the advice on the interbonds stubby, but I cringe at the thought of spending $60 on 20 pops. I'll stick with the 150 grain soft point Federal power shock's because they work well at $15
