If you are looking at more then just deer, like Elk for instance then the possibility for longer ranges of more the 300 yards are involved you might want to look at either a 7mm Rem Mag or a .300 Win Mag. Both are extremely capable of reaching out to 500 yards and beyond for that once in a life time shot if need be! And believe it or not, the 7 Mag actually starts to out perform the .300 after 500 yards. And if you worry about either being too much for deer then don't. Dead is dead and no one really eats the meat off of the ribs.

Ok, so I lied. I wound up going to a local gun shop and walked out with a Winchester 70 in 30-06. $380 for the gun and scope mounts. I can't wait to try it out....

Good choice! If you can handle 12 gauge slugs, you can handle rifle recoil! I would put 12 gauge slug recoil aroung the .300 mag level, if not greater.

Get the 3006. I bought one because I want to moose and bear hunt with it later on. I just need a group here in Ontario. The 30-06 will be a little better for elk-a little more energy.
