Yeah, the .338 ultra mag and .338 Lapua mag don't operate much over 3000 fps with 225 and 250 grain bullets.

Soil, you win the grand prize, for the correct answer. The .338 Fed. offers nothing new at all.
The .338 Win mag only has a 100 yard advantage in velocity. The .338 Federal and the .338 Win mag have essentially the same velocity with the 210 grain partition
The 338 Fed. and 338 WM do not run the 210 Gr. Partition at the same velocity!!!!! The 338 Fed. pushes that bullet at about 2650, while the .338 Win Mag can push at over 3000. The .338WM has quite a bit of an advantage over the .338 Fed., but like you said Whoopty Friggin' Doo.

chantecler111. What you are looking for is the 375-06 JDJ. It was developed by JD jones for the Encore. You can form the case from 30-06 or 35 Whelen. I don't know to much about it but I think it takes a special method of forming the cases. He later went on to using the 444 Marlin case for his wildcats.

Well, you're a quick one. Thanks Captain Obvious. Just kidding.
The .338 Win mag only has a 100 yard advantage in velocity.
The .338 Federal and the .338 Win mag have essentially the same velocity with the 210 grain partition at 0 and 100 yards respectively.
Respectively meaning the Federal at 0 and the win mag at 100. If you're gonna quote me finish the quote.

The Win mag doesn't even aproach 3000 fps with the 210 grain bullet as factory loaded. The .338 Federal is published at 2630 at the muzzle and the .338 Win mag is published at2830 at the muzzle and 2601 at 100 yards. This is where the 100 yard advantage comes from for the win mag. Actually it's more like a 90 yard advantge.

The bullets loaded in the Federal will perform just fine at it's velocities and intended ranges. Which is well inside of what most hunters shoot any how.

The 40 caliber Whelen didn't fly though. Not enough shoulder to headspace.

I would think that case would just about be running out of shoulder with a .40 Cal bullet.

I see that Ruger released some of the calibers for the upgraded M77, the hawkeye. It includes stainless synthetics in both 338 federal and 358 win. They have them on theruger website.

I realize it will likely be sometime before ruger ships the Hawkeyes but for short action 33 and 35 cal fans its something

that's all the .338 federal is-a commericalized version of the 338-08. I honestly see no reason for federal to come out with it because the .358 win will do anything that the .338 will-I believe this is simply a marketing gimmack.
