ok last question. any big diff as far as recoil in the .308 and the 30 06?????

Very close. The .308 might be slightly less if used in an identical rifle. But, probably not enough difference that you could actually feel it.

I definetely recommend the 300. Great all around rifle with the knockdown to get the job done and the accuracy you need!

.30-06 for me. It's been dropping game for 100 years now. And it's cheaper to shoot than the other two. I've bought boxes for $8.99 each. There is a wider variety of factory loadings for the '06, so if you don't reload you won't be left with a few choices. Stores have a well-stocked supply of it too.

For normal single zero rifle hunting. . . I would probably get the 3006. Besides, when you get to Two Dot Montana and forggot your shells. . .The grocery store will have 30'06 shells in stock so your trip isn't ruined. If you ask for 300WSM, the will tell you to drive a 1/2 day either way to the "city."

The 30'06 just plain gets it done. It may not shoot bears at 400 yards, but bears are shot at 100 yards or less. Same with other game and distaance.

if i had to choose one caliber only AND i lived in the part of the country where you could shoot bears, moose, elk, etc......i believe i'd stay with a Weatherby .300 Magnum. since i live in Florida and will probally never be able to afford to hunt the above named animals, i recently bought a .25-06 and am retiring the Weatherby.

Let me preface by saying I've not hunted bears, or shot a .338 - but I'd opt for 30-06 (I have owned one of those). It's as much gun as I'd care for, and I think as much as you need. Lots of grizzlies have been killed by 30-30; 30-06 ought to do. In fact... I think I'd hunt just about anything with a 30-06, and not feel undergunned. But then, I'm a whitetail hunter.

I think a 30'06 with one of those 200+ grain round nose bullets would do fine.

We'll you had to bring bear into the fold eh....
My ultimate choices would be the 8mm Rem mag or .311 Imperial Mag for the deer through bear thing...
Flat shooting through long ranges..Perfect for goat and sheep...Yet pack more than enough punch to dump a bear of any size......
I personally use a 30-06 for all my hunting deer, elk ,moose sheep, goat...
And I do carry a load of 180gr..TBBC for bear just in case I find myself in trouble......
I do have a .338 but they are a real pain its a real pain in therear to carry around on long hikes and trips deep into moutain terrain...
Therfore givin another option I'd rather carry the wieght of either of the 2 cals. I mentioned above...
The 225gr. TBBC in a 338 really isn't flatter shooting than a 180gr. in an 30-06...Velocities are roughly only 100fps 125fps apart depending on propelents used...
Anything less than a .225gr. in a .338 and you might as well shoot a
.300 win in 180gr.......
Therefore my answer to your question...,300 win mag with 180 gr..bullets is my choice for deer through bear...

If I was going to by just 1 centerfire rifle it would be a 300wm.I feel it is in bettwen the other 2.I have a good friend that I hunt with alot that hunts several diffrent states every year and he has killed alot of game with his 300wm.I would be looking at a decent mid price range Remington SPS or a Savage 116 weather worrior in 300wm.I would also buy a good scope for the rifle,Leupold or Nikon,in 3x9.With this combo it might not be the best choice for everything but will get the job done if you get to know this gun well
