Default 243 WSSM

Never heard of the super short magnums. I had my eye on a "243" for about a month and my wife came home today with the gun in her car. I guess she just felt like being nice.Just wanted to know if anyone knew anything about the WSSM verses the regular 243 shells.

IMO they are going to be a very short lived cartridge. I would have got a .243 instead. wssm's are still readily available in the win mod 70's if that tells you anything. Gunshops can't move them and they were a big flop in sales. The only cartridges that are here to stay in the short mag family IMO is the .300wsm and the .325wsm......Tell your wife that you are very HAPPY though as a wife that buys you guns is a keeper. Either reload for that round or start buying up ammo for it as it will not be easy to find in the future IMO

I like the idea of the rounds but the .243 is already a short mag. Coming from a .308 case that makes it a short mag.I love seeing gun makers and ammo makers try to keep us as buyers interested in there product. So I cant say that you .243 wssm will be here long but it is a cartridge and not abit behind any of the other .243 based rounds. So if you like it shoot the hell out of it if not and not shot maybe they will work out a return for a .243 .

There is not much of a gain that I can see with the 243 WSSM. The 243 is already a short action. In some books the WSSM show 100-150 fps gain in velocity but thats hardly enough to make a real world difference. I picked one up as well but have not done anything with it yet. I would buy a good supply of casings and plan to reload it. The Lee loading kit is a good place to start. Buy a good reloading manual first and do some reading. Thats a good way to start learning. There are also some good vidios that I have seen that are probably well worth the money.

you will need to get a .243 wssm die set and just buy .243 calibre bullets to load in your casings.

Grin and bear it! Enjoy the gun, although the .243 WSSM wouldn't be my choice, it should be a good shooter, except for ammo availability. A wife that brings guns home to you should NEVER be discouraged though!

I bought one about a year ago and have to agree w/everone else. It's not gonna take the 243 win off the market and will be a short lived cartrige. Start stockpiling ammo now. As far as shooting goes, it's a perfect gun. I killed 8 with mine this past winter all one shot complete passthru's. Nothing wrong with it shooting wise just trying to fill a void that was not empty to begin with. But the bright side for you is "your wife bought it for you" I'll swap you mine for her and throw in a 243wssm!
