A good overall rifle
I'm going to purchase a rifle but I don't know which one to get. I live in wisconsin but I 'm looking for a rifle that would be of good use in the U.S. and of course on whitetails. I've been doing research and any of the short mags seem real nice (.325,.300, 7mm, .270) but there is also the old realiables 7mm and 30-06 and I don't want to break the bank either. Both of the reliables have taken all the animals on the big game list.I'm torn please help me out

I would shy away from the WSM family personally. I was really interested in getting one until I looked for ammo. It is very hard to find, at least around here. As far as rifles I would consider the Savage, and CZ lines. I am leaning towards the CZ myself, and they are running $530 around here. Good luck

I'm pretty happy with my new Ruger M77 Mark II in 30-06. On sale for just over $500 for the laminate stock and stainless model.I put a Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 on top. It's huntin' accurate enough for me. I'm good for everything from Elk and bear to praire goats, andammo is easy to find in numerous flavors.

There sure is not shortage of ammo for the WSM's where I live. Every gun store has them and Walmart does as well. Also you can order it from Midway and many others. I wouldn't let that stop me. However I will reload for mine so its not an issue anyway. I would look at the 7mm-08 in the Remongton SPS. They come with 24 inch barrels and properly loaded, the recoil is light and yet they will take all NA big game. Maybe not the Big Bears but everything else.

I'd personally stay away from a 30-06 and get the 7mag between those two.
Out of the short mags you may want to stay away from the 7mm WSM, it does not have the following that the 300 and 270 has. The 325 is the newest one out, and its hard to say if it is going to catch on or not.

I agree!!!! i personally had a choice just recently to pick between the 7wsm and the 7mag and right before i mad my choice i went and looked @ the ammo for both and i picked the 7mm remington mag simply because of the ammo selection..... and who knows if the 7wsm is going to get big or get to the point were they are rare!!!

Ya know, you cant go wrong with anything from the 270 to 30 cal range that can throw a bullet up to 160 grains at 2600 to 2700 fps. That is a broad description, but it gives you lattitude. With all of the advancements in ammunition technology, you can use dang near anything you want. EJ
