RE: New Remington 710 rifle

I'll mark on my calendar 7 years from now to post the status of my 710...dead or alive. This season will be season #4 for my trusty 710. :D

As for firearms collecting dust, unfortunately mine collect more than I care to admit. Got kids in 4th, 8th and 10th grade, with the oldest playing football. Pretty much keeps me busy from late July to end of October. Then the girls play basketball for a couple of months during the winter. Got church on Sunday, so I've got the Saturdays of the year plus some vacation time plus the daylight hours after work to work in time at the range. I hope you'll understand if I just don't have time to spend totin' my 710 up to your deer camp. :)

Sorry to read about your friend.

I have shot a 710 in .270 for the past 2 seasons and haven't had any problems whatsoever.

I would never consider using a Savage under normal circumstances. If I was forced to choose between a Savage and a Remington 710, I'd cry as I walked away with the Savage.
Ranger, what problem do you have with the Savage? I just bought one in 243. Shot it a little yesterday in 30-40 mph winds, so couldn't tell much. I very much like the way it is put together and think it will be a good shooter.

I have read a lot of good about them and not a lot of bad. Would be curious to hear your opinion.

Thanks.

Didn't mean to strike a Savage nerve but here goes:
Using a nut to attach a barrel to the receiver instead of threading it and actually headspacing is rediculous.110 bolts are even more silly. The safety is weak, and the triggers are horrible, especially that rooty poo Canjar wannabe Set Trigger they make now.
However I have re-barrelled a few (without the nut), replaced the triggers and they shot really well. But they were still Savages.
There's a reason why custom builders use 700's, Mod 70's, 98's, and Dakota's,..and not Savage.

Well, you haven't struck a nerve in me, yet.:D:D:D Seriously, I don't know enough about any of the designs to really debate.

But, some of the things you mention are actually positives from other peoples' perspective.

You say the safety is weak, is it dangerous? That would be very important to me if it is.Also, I assume you are talking about the Accu-trigger. Most say they are good and you say they are horrible. Mine was 2 1/2 lbs out of the box and no creep. My Ruger 10-22 was 7+ lbs. After I put in a new trigger kit, including an oversized pin, it is 2 lbs. But, after I was done, I think I had $70 or so into the trigger alone.

I know they aren't a custom rifle, they are what they are. I also know the scope that came on it is a cheap Simmons, but it is adequate for what I want, right now. For $355 I could not be more thrilled. If I were going to pay $1000, would I buy the Savage? No.

Anyway, I am not trying to start a nasty bunch of name calling. There has been enough of that on here lately. I am interested in hearing everyones opinions, even if I don't agree sometimes.

Ranger, Also, I added a question to the "Primos Coyote Calls???" thread, I am hoping you will answer, even though I have a Savage.:D

Simply get a 710 and a 700, look em' over. You'll notice a change. You get what you pay for usually.

Right on target.
If you use the 700 as a baseline, you won't even think of trusting a 710.

I have just found out that three of my acquaintances are shooting the 710 as well. 2 of them are shooting the 7mm and one is shooting a 270 like myself. All are extremely satisfied with thier rifles. The one guy though that doesnt take care of his rifle at all has rust on the bolt already though, but not taking care of any gun will lead to that problem.
