The modelling clay actually has too much variability in its consistancy due to it's varying water content, as it dries it becomes harder. I like the idea of a sliding mass of known weight positioned behind the butt. (10 kg. scale test weight mounted on a formica cutting board, set on 1/2" polished round stock bars rolling across two tracks made of meter sticks).
